He started barking and growling in the catch pen at the other dogs through the play yard fence. The handler easily clasped the collar around his neck. He was walked into the play yard on a long, loose leash. He had a tucked tail and concerned eyes. A female shepherd tried to approach him. He started growling at her and backing up. The female shepherd walked away. A female poodle mix approached him. He was tense and growling at her. He exchanged a timid greeting with her. When she lingered near his face, he snapped and created space away from her. A male pit bull was walked up to him. He started growling and backing away. He was walked out of the play yard for a handling assessment. In the catch pen he started barking and growling at the other dogs through the fence. He is barrier reactive. He is defensive and needs confidence building and continued socialization. Due to his defensive behavior, he would do best in a home with no other dogs. He was given a moment to acclimate to his surroundings. He started barking and growling at the dogs who approached the fence. He learned against the handler as he scratched the top of his head. He allowed the handler to check his ears with no reaction. When the handler checked his teeth, he turned his head away. When the handler touched his front paw, he pushed it down. When the handler touched his back paw, he pulled it away, spun around with concerned eyes and was licking his lips. When the handler touched his tail, he sat down. After his assessment he came back up to the handler seeking affection. He was returned to his kennel without issue. He needs someone who will go slow and build trust with him.
