A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Barley was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, and a soft tail wag. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel. He quickly became startled and jumped away when his neighbor became barrier reactive with him. He pulled strongly on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. He offered a soft growl when he entered the catch pen. His body was tense, his tail was stiff, and he displayed a stoic demeanor. He was muzzled prior to entering the yard for the safety of the other dogs. He entered the yard and exchanged tense greetings with the other dogs. He was involved in a minor scuffle with another dog, although he did not really participate in the altercation, and moved away as quickly as possible. He tried to remove the muzzle several times, and became tense when the handler corrected him. He stared at the handler for a few seconds before he began to roam the yard. He jumped on the handler roughly, and solicited petting. He attempted to mount the other dogs with a tense body, but was steerable. He continued to solicit petting from the handler, but occasionally became tense and uncomfortable. Barley remained tense and uncomfortable with the other dogs, and the muzzle was not removed during this playgroup session. Barley is selective with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.
