A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Nutmeg was at the back of the kennel, but seemed interested in the runner. Her body was relaxed and wiggly, her eyes were soft, her ears were up, and her tail was neutral with a loose wag. She required coaxing to approach the front of the kennel. She sniffed and licked the runner's hand, but was avoidant of the leash. She solicited petting from the runner, so the runner slid the leash over his arm while petting her, and was able to gently drop the leash over her head. She walked nicely on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar while soliciting petting. She ignored the other dogs at the fence. She entered the yard, and greeted the other dogs with a tense body. She lunged and snapped at the other dogs in a defensive manner, but was easy to steer away from them. She roamed the yard with a neutral body, and solicited petting from the handlers. She bared her teeth at the other dogs whenever they approached her, and continued to lunge and snap at them if they remained in her space for too long. Nutmeg is defensive with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. She was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. She approached the handler with a relaxed body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail wag. She allowed the handler to pet her whole body, but was slightly uncomfortable when her back legs were touched. However, she did not growl or try to bite, and remained easy to handle. When the assessment was over, she continued to solicit petting from the handler.
