About Henry

Animal ID: A5738230 Date Admitted to County Care: 2025-11-12T00:00:00 Animal Type: DOG Availability Status: RESC ONLY Primary Breed: CHIHUAHUA LH Primary Color: BLACK Sex: Male Size: SMALL Weight: 8.5 Age: 3 years 0 months Medium Energy Level APPROVED ADOPTION PARTNERS ONLY Waiver & Indemnity Small Dogs OK Description A smart, sensitive boy who came to us as a stray and is still learning to trust the world again. When he first arrived, Henry was very tense and unsure; he gave clear warning signals like yawning, showing his teeth, fleeing, and avoiding handling. He has lunged to bite when he felt cornered or overwhelmed, so he communicates clearly when he?s uncomfortable. With patience and the right approach, Henry shows signs of being workable?he just needs an experienced, confident handler who understands fear-based behaviors and can help him feel safe πŸ’›. Because of his high risk for fear-biting, Henry is available only to rescue partners with a required waiver and indemnity. If you?re a seasoned dog handler who believes every dog deserves a chance, Henry may be waiting for you 🐢✨. November 17, 2025 E25-089875 HANDLING DOWNEY A5738230 ?The behaviors described today reflect the dog?s responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Henry approached the front of the kennel with a slightly tense body, wide eyes with dilated pupils, and a high tail with a fast wag. He sniffed the handler?s hand, curled his lip, and then ran to the back of the kennel. The handler entered the kennel, and attempted to leash him. He began yelping, lunging, and snapping at the handler. He ran around the kennel in a panic, and was unable to settle even when the handler knelt down and spoke to him softly. The handler exited the kennel, and returned after a few minutes with a blanket. The handler entered the kennel again, and attempted to cover him with the blanket. He continued to lunge and snap at the handler, but would press his body close to her when she knelt near him. Anytime the handler moved, Henry would growl, bare his teeth, and stare at the handler with hard eyes. If the handler extended her hand toward him, he would lunge, snap, and then run away. He appeared to be more comfortable with the handler when his kennel mate was nearby, so the handler opened the divider and allowed Henry to run to his kennel mate. The handler exited the kennel, and gave Henry some time to decompress before entering the kennel again. Henry immediately began growling at the handler, but the handler ignored him while petting his kennel mate. The handler knelt in the corner of the kennel, and Henry?s kennel mate climbed into the handler?s lap. Henry slowly approached to sniff the handler, but froze when the handler made eye contact with him. His pupils dilated and his lip curled as he retreated. The handler ignored him again while petting his kennel mate, and Henry moved closer to the handler once again. He sniffed the handler?s hand, and moved slightly closer. The handler lightly touched Henry?s back using one finger, but Henry immediately whipped around and tried to bite the handler?s hand. The handler moved her hand away, but Henry began lunging toward her face while snapping at her. The handler stood up, and Henry lunged forward and tried to bite the handler?s knee. The handler quickly exited the kennel as Henry charged forward while growling and trying to bite the handler?s legs. Henry could not be safely removed from the kennel for assessment, and could not be safely handled while in the kennel. However, Henry has displayed friendly behavior with public and other staff.
