Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Rocky approached the front of the kennel with a neutral body, neutral gaze, and a neutral tail with a soft wag. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, and pulled moderately on leash. He briefly became barrier reactive with one of his neighbors, and had to be moved away by the runner. He relaxed as he continued walking, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was tense and he growled at the other dogs. He was muzzled prior to entering the yard. He greeted the other dogs with a neutral body, wide eyes, and a high tail. He spent most of his time trying to remove the muzzle while roaming around the yard. The muzzle was removed, and he was allowed to freely interact with the other dogs. He roamed the yard with a neutral body, soft eyes, an open pant, and a neutral tail with a soft wag. He did not engage in play with the other dogs, but was able to coexist in a group of calm dogs. He was moved to the side yard and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He stood next to the handler with a neutral body, wide eyes, an open pant, and a low tail. He allowed the handler to pet his whole body with no issues. Rocky was easy to handle, and displayed no concerning behavior during the handling assessment. He was easily returned to his kennel when the assessment was over.
