A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. Mariana A5788655 (Intact) was sitting on her bed with a timid demeanor upon the runner's arrival. She was unwilling to approach until the runner opened the kennel door. Mariana was easily leashed and made her way to the catch pen with a light pull on the leash, appearing nervous while passing through the kennel environment. Once inside the catch pen, she received a collar and leash without issue, though appearing uncomfortable when approached by some of the dogs at the fence. Mariana was allowed into the yard, but she quickly became overwhelmed by the other dogs, causing her to respond defensively. She repeatedly air-snapped to signal for personal space, exhibiting a tense posture. Mariana was moved to the yard with calmer dogs, helping her briefly explore her surroundings while exhibiting a softer body. However, she continued to avoid interaction with the other dogs, tolerating them from a distance. Mariana preferred socialization with the handlers as she occasionally solicited affection while remaining next to them for the remainder of the session. Once the session concluded, she was returned to her kennel without incident. Due to her defensive response, Mariana could benefit from a calm companion and confidence-building training. Also, continued socialization in a yard with calm dogs may allow her to interact at her own comfort level and gradually develop her social skills.
