He was moved to the yard with the calmer dogs; however, Tater chose to isolate himself from everyone in the yard for the remainder of the session. Once the session concluded, he was separated from the group to begin the handling assessment. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. Tater A5793771 (Altered) was allowed to decompress prior to the assessment. Firm leash control was required as he continuously pulled away from the handler. Tater eventually gave up and rested flat on the grass with a shut-down posture. He avoided eye contact, panting as the handler slowly palpated his ears, mouth, abdomen, tail, and paws. Tater exhibited a tense posture throughout the process. Once the session concluded, the handler continued to engage with Tater, providing coaxing and petting to encourage him to come out of his shut-down state, to no avail. He was returned to his kennel without incident. Due to his nervous nature and lack of socialization, Tater is currently not available for public adoption. The kennel divider was lowered to prevent further retreating. Tater backed into a corner, requiring the runner to step into the kennel and slowly place the leash over his head. Once leashed, Tater exited the kennel on his own, walking alongside the runner while appearing nervous in the kennel environment. Once inside the catch pen, Tater was cautiously collared and leashed, maintaining a slightly tense posture during the process. He was then allowed into the yard, where he ignored the dogs, preferring to explore his surroundings.
