A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Cheech was barking defensively at the front of the kennel. The runner began to speak softly to him, but he continued to bark defensively. He retreated the corner of the kennel, emptied his bladder, and then returned to the front of the kennel with a relaxed body. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, pulled moderately on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was tense. He growled, lunged, and muzzle punched the fence. He was muzzled prior to entering the yard for the safety of the other dogs. He entered the yard, and immediately growled and lunged at the other dogs. The handler used the shake-can to steer him away from the dogs. When he returned, he greeted the other dogs in a more appropriate manner. He anxiously roamed the yard while panting heavily. He remained tense when the dogs where near him, and challenged an older male. He remained easy to steer. As playgroup began to wind down, his muzzle was removed and he was allowed to freely interact with one calm female. He laid in the middle of the yard with a neutral body, neutral gaze, ears back, a heavy pant, and a neutral tail, and showed little interest in interacting with the other dog. Cheech is selective of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. Cheech was the last dog in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He did not approach the handler, and flinched when the handler approached and reached for his leash. He stood next to the handler with a neutral body, neutral gaze, ears back, a heavy pant, and a neutral tail. He allowed the handle to pet his head and back with no issues, but flinched whenever his neck was touched. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth, and touch his front paws. When his tail and back paws were touched, he would sit down and look at the handler with concerned eyes. He panted anxiously throughout the assessment, but remained easy to handle. When the assessment was over, he moved away from the handler and did not return to solicit petting.
