A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Bella was at the back of the kennel with soft eyes and a timid demeanor. The runner knelt in front of the kennel, and Bella slowly approached with coaxing. She sniffed the runner's hand, and allowed the runner to pet her through the kennel door. She was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, and walked slowly by the runner's side while bypassing the other kennels. She was wary of being collared, but the runner moved slowly and was able to collar her with no issues. In the catch pen, her body was neutral, her eyes were neutral, and her tail was low. She entered the yard, and bypassed the other dogs without greeting them. She briefly roamed the yard with a neutral body, keeping to herself as much as possible. She hid behind the bench with a quiet demeanor, occasionally moving away when the dogs approached her. Bella is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. She was moved to the side yard and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. Her body was slightly tense, her eyes were wide, and she panted heavily. The handler moved slowly, and was able to pet her whole body. She closed her mouth and leaned her body away from the handler while remaining tense and uncomfortable. She did not growl or try to bite, but was clearly uncomfortable with being handled. When the assessment was over, she stayed near the handler but did not solicit petting. She was easily returned to her kennel.
