Midge

Midge is an adoptable female American Bulldog looking for a home at Riverside County Animal Services-Riverside in Jurupa Valley, California. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 5 days left, listed due to medical. Adopting Midge, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

MUST EXIT SHELTER BY 4PM 8/29**** Severe medical. Transferdas@rivco.org Breed: Bulldog mix Age: The shelter staff think I am about 4 years old. Midge is seriously ill with pneumonia, is NOT EATING and continues to have rapid, shallow breathing. She needs an immediate exit to a rescue, foster or adopter capable of obtaining continued veterinary care. But there is something critically important in her record: TODAY, 8/28, THE SHELTER DOCUMENTED THAT MIDGE APPEARED MORE ALERT AND WAS SITTING UP. Because her mentation appeared improved, HER DEADLINE WAS EXTENDED UNTIL TOMORROW AFTERNOON. That means Midge has been given a very narrow window to survive.Midge entered the shelter on 8/8 with suspected upper respiratory illness. At intake, she was bright, alert and responsive, with a normal gait, normal breathing and a pain score of 0/4. She was started on medication. On 8/15, she was documented as 'BAR, energetic' with 'no URI symptoms at this time.' Then, on 8/26, a counselor became concerned after finding Midge outside in the heat, lethargic and initially not responding when called. She was documented as dehydrated with harsh breathing. Radiographs were performed and PNEUMONIA was diagnosed. By 8/27, her condition had become extremely serious: 🚨 Not eating 🚨 Labored breathing 🚨 Blood-tinged, purulent nasal discharge 🚨 8'10% dehydration 🚨 Severely abnormal lung fields on radiographs 🚨 Concern for aspiration pneumonia She was placed on IV fluids and injectable antibiotics. On 8/28, she still was not eating and continued receiving IV fluids and antibiotics. Then, at 3:12 PM, staff documented: 'P's mentation seems better - more alert, sitting up but still having fast shallow breathing still not eating extended the deadline to tomorrow PM.' That improvement matters. Only about 90 minutes later, Midge was taken outside for media. Despite everything her body is fighting, staff documented that she was EAGER TO GET OUT OF HER KENNEL, LEASHED EASILY, WALKED WITHOUT ISSUE, STOPPED FOR A POTTY BREAK AND ALLOWED HANDLING AND PETTING. She became tired on the way back and needed to be carried. That should demonstrate the seriousness of her illness ' not a lack of will to live. Midge is an 89-pound dog battling severe pneumonia. She is sick, weak and exhausted, but today she was more alert, sat up, eagerly left her kennel and WALKED outside. Her documented improvement deserves to be given meaningful consideration before an irreversible decision is made. A euthanasia deadline should not become a substitute for adequate time to determine whether a dog who is actively receiving treatment can continue to improve. MIDGE NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE MEDICAL EXIT. THERE IS NO TIME TO WAIT. She needs a rescue, foster or adopter prepared to continue veterinary treatment immediately.
