Harlem has shown a pattern of overarousal and persistent mounting behavior directed toward handlers. He has been repeatedly reported mounting in the driveway and grabbing a handler's leg, while returning to the care center, and when handlers are seated or standing. He is noted to also become overaroused by barking dogs and visual contact with his neighboring dog and has begun mounting the handler. Harlem is otherwise social and affectionate with handlers. Medically, Harlem is healthy at this time. Harlem came into the care center as an owner surrender due to a familiy memebr in the home having allergies. Harlem prior owners report that "He is a smart guy who knows lots of tricks- in both English and Spanish! He even waits for food/water to be prepared and told it's ready before going to it. He's a big sweetie who loves nothing more than pets and belly rubs." Harlem is generally social, affectionate, and responsive to handlers, with a loose and wiggly body during most interactions. He is easily leashed and typically walks with mild to moderate leash tension, showing no significant reactivity toward dogs, people, or environmental stimuli. He enjoys attention, leans into petting, gently accepts treats, and responds to cues such as "sit" and "paw." Harlem has demonstrated interest in toys and engages well with pattern games and place training. However, he has a persistent pattern of over-arousal and mounting behavior, particularly when returning to the shelter, in the driveway, or when handlers are stationary. While previously redirectable with treats, his mounting has recently increased, he repeatedly attempted to grab and mount the handler's leg and could not be redirected with treats or squeakers, requiring physical removal. Harlem would benefit from an adopter/Foster through one of our New Hope partners who can provide consistent structure, enrichment, exercise, and reward-based training to help manage his arousal and mounting behavior. Meet Harlem! Harlem was surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him, and now this handsome, affectionate boy is ready to find his next forever family. He's a social, playful dog with a big heart, a love for belly rubs, and plenty of personality. Bonus points if you speak Spanish because Harlem knows tricks in both English and Spanish. Talk about a bilingual best friend! My Ideal Home Harlem is looking for an active home that can keep both his body and mind engaged. He enjoys walks, enrichment activities like food puzzles and long-lasting chews, and loves learning with positive reinforcement. After a day of adventures, he's just as happy to stretch out for belly rubs and relax with his favorite people. Good with Other Pets? Harlem should be the only pet in a home without cats or other small animals, as he has a history of chasing them on walks. Slow introductions to other dogs may be possible, but dog parks are not recommended. Good with Kids? Harlem would do best in a home without children under 13. Things to Know Harlem is an affectionate, intelligent dog who loves spending time with his people. He's crate trained, enjoys car rides, and already knows several cues, making him a wonderful companion for someone looking for a dog with a great foundation. He can become excited around high-value items, so continuing positive reinforcement training and providing appropriate enrichment will help him thrive. With his sweet nature and goofy charm, Harlem is ready to make himself right at home. BoroughBuddy Notes A BoroughBuddy writes: Harlem is a move-in ready dog! He is gentle and wonderful on a leash. We encountered many pigeons, squirrels, and kids and Harlem was unfazed. He is a very mellow dog. If you stand in one spot for more than a minute, he'll happily settle down by your feet. One of his cutest quirks is celebrating with joyful rolls on the ground whenever he's happy. Although he wasn't able to play with other dogs, he showed polite interest with an adorable play bow. He loves pets, snuggles, and taking his time to read and respond to all the neighborhood "pee-mails." Harlem is ready to be someone's loyal adventure buddy and couch companion all in one.
