Lucas

Lucas is an adoptable male Siberian Husky looking for a home at NYC ACC-Queens in Ridgewood, New York. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is listed on the shelter's euthanasia list, listed due to behavior, and that date has now passed. Shelters often move these dates, so Lucas may still be waiting. The shelter can confirm.

His previous owner described him as a friendly, outgoing dog who is tolerant of children but will lunge at strangers when approached on walks. During his stay at the care centers, Lucas has been tolerant of handling and will warm up with a slow approach. Lucas was returned after biting the adopter's partner on the face when they bent down to pet Lucas. The bite did not break the skin. Details about the incident are conflicting as the adopter later stated that the bite did not break skin. Medically, he is apparently healthy. Lucas was surrendered by his original owner due to not having the financial means to take care of him because of a new baby. His previous family described him as an independent, quiet dog who preferred contact on his own terms. He is reported to like any kind of treats, was fed a dry food diet, and struggles when attempting to put him in the car unless distracted. Lucas is reported to be outgoing with strangers but has escalated to lunging; he is also reported to resource guard food and stolen objects. Lucas has a tense body and will hover over an item and has escalated to hard barking, growling, snapping, or attempting to bite. Lucas did escalate to biting the resident's small dog when they approached his food. The bite did draw blood. Lucas was returned by his previous adopter due to a bite incident in the home. Details about the bite are conflicting. It was reported that Lucas became uncomfortable when one of the adopters introduced themselves. He turned around, lunged, and bit them on the nose. Due to the concerns reported in the previous homes, we recommend that Lucas be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope rescue partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) needed.
