Billie is an adoptable female American Bulldog looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - West in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a young adult and medium in size. SOURCE NOTES THESE DOGS ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND LOVES PETS, SHARING THAT THEY SEEK ATTENTION Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 8/30/2026 Dog was standing at front of kennel, tense body, tail down, eyes wide. Easily startled, jumped back as handler closed divider. Dog ate treats left on floor, backed up into corner as handler opened gate. Brief low growl. Handler was able to step in, place leash with large loop. Dog flinched but tolerated leashing. Exited slowly, body low. Walked near handler, some stop and go to sniff, wary of surroundings but no issues walking to small play yard. Dog hesitated to pass through gates but would follow behind handler when coaxed. Handler adjusted leash stopper, dropped leash, sat on bench. Dog briefly sniffed around grass, then approached handler, stood in front of them while keeping some distance. Dog had wide-eyes, tail down but not tucked. Ate treats left on grass, then began accepting them from hand. Demonstrated \"sit\" command. Dog tolerated brief petting on top of head, then would flinch away; handler did not force interaction. Dog remained near handler, head swiveling, ears back, aware to all sounds outside of yard. Dog had closed mouth, saliva dripping from corners, breathing hard through nose while surveying. Handler stood, dog followed, allowed leash retrieval. Stopped to relieve self before following handler out of yard. Walked with moderate, nervous pull on return but did stop a few times to sniff surroundings. Dog stood still beside handler while waiting for another staff member and dog to pass by up ahead. While passing kennels, this dog would slow down to sniff calm dogs, appeared to soften and would wag tail, then walk away on own. Entered kennel with minimal guidance, leash removed via clip lead for dog's comfort. 8/29/2026 Closed in. Dog was standing at front of kennel; tense; ears back; whale eyed; tail tucked; offered treat; took treat gently; opened kennel door; remained tense; able to place large loop over; leashed; slowly exited; walked with light pull; wary of surroundings. In yard, dog explored for a few moments; panting; furrowed brow; tail tucked; darting eyes; approached handler; stood near handler; slowly pet; skin crawled; turned head; side eye; sat next to handler; eventually laid down; handler slowly pet; dog started to turn onto side/back; panting; whale eyed; handler stopped petting; dog remained laying down; offered treats; not interested; remained next to handler entire time; panting; tense; tail tucked; allowed for slow petting on head; leaned in briefly. Handler picked leash up; walked well back to kennel; startled by customers approaching us; darted away; waited until pathway was clear; continued walking; entered kennel; allowed for slow leash removal. 8/27/2026 DNE day one. Barking with hard stare. 8/26/2026 Easy leashing, walking into Triage. Wide eyed, furrowed brow, tail tucked, shifting gaze between handlers. Ducked away from touch. Able to muzzlewrap for vaccines. Walked stop n go to kennel.
