Flaco

Flaco is an adoptable male Siberian Husky looking for a home at BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas. He is a young adult and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Flaco, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Flaco. I am a neutered male, black and white Siberian Husky mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years and 1 month old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Aug 29, 2026. I am in kennel DC26. Weight: 62 lbs | BCS 5/9 Intake date: 8/29/2026 🩺 MEDICAL NOTES: Heartworm HIGH POSITIVE. Flaco is neutered and was noted to have a shaved lion cut and brown leather collar. He received DA2PP-V, Bordetella and Rabies vaccines, deworming, Pyrantel and Advantage Multi. 🐾 BEHAVIOR NOTES: Flaco is affectionate, playful and easy to leash. He enjoys treats, pets and playtime. He can be mouthy with the leash and needs patience and experienced handling. 💙 He has shown he can thrive with the right person. 🔷Intake: Flaco came into BARC as a euthanasia request on 8/29. 📝 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: 9/5: Flaco approached staff with a loose, wiggly body. He was easily leashed and walked next to staff with a loose, wiggly body. In the runs, he nibbled on a staff member's sweater. When staff attempted to remove the leash, he grabbed it and began pulling on it. 9/4: Flaco greeted staff with a loose, wiggly body and sat for treats. He walked on a loose leash to the runs. While in the run, a neighboring dog barked at him and Flaco barked back, but he then ran around the yard and ignored the other dog. He greeted staff at the gate, walked loosely back to his kennel and allowed the leash to be removed. 9/3: Flaco greeted staff with a wagging tail, was easy to leash and walked on a loose leash to and from the runs without any issues. He allowed the leash to be removed, lost attention and was petted. 9/3: While another dog was being walked past Flaco's kennel, Flaco immediately charged forward and attempted to fence fight with the dog, displaying air snapping, barking, snarling and baring his teeth. 9/2: Flaco greeted staff at the front of his kennel with a wagging tail and loose body. He was easy to leash and, when spoken to gently and petted, crawled into staff's lap and rubbed against them for attention. He walked on a loose leash to and from the runs, returned to his kennel easily, allowed petting and took treats from staff. 9/1: During an afternoon walk, Flaco ran around in the run, chased a ball and wanted to play tug-of-war with another toy. He allowed staff to pet him and put a bandana on him without issues, then walked on a loose leash back to his kennel. 9/1: Flaco approached the kennel door with an open-mouth smile and neutral body. He was easily leashed and walked well next to staff. In the runs, he became flinchy when staff attempted to remove his leash, so staff waited until he wasn't looking to remove it. He returned to his kennel easily but became mouthy again when staff attempted to retrieve the leash. 8/31: Flaco displayed similar behavior when staff attempted to remove his leash. He was flinchy and lunged forward, becoming mouthy with the leash and attempting to bite it. 8/30: Flaco stood at the front of his kennel with a neutral face and body. He was leashed without issue, walked loosely beside staff and did well in the runs. He returned to his kennel easily, but staff did not attempt to remove the leash. 8/29: Flaco was unable to be worked up due to his behavior. He had a tense body, air snapped toward staff's hand when they attempted to place an ID band and began thrashing when muzzled. 🚑𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: - 8/31: Flaco weighed 62 lbs and tested positive for heartworms. - 8/30: Flaco was noted to be an intact male at the time of his initial exam. Staff noted that he became head shy and attempted to bite when hands were brought near him or when he was manipulated or told to do something. Daily behavior monitoring was recommended. - Received routine intake vaccines, deworming and flea prevention. 💖 Flaco is a young, energetic boy whose notes show that he can be incredibly social, playful and affectionate with people once he's comfortable. He has greeted staff with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail, sat for treats, walked nicely on leash, chased a ball, played with toys and even crawled into a staff member's lap for affection. His biggest challenges appear during handling and leash removal, when he can become flinchy and mouthy, and he has also shown significant reactivity toward another dog passing his kennel. At the same time, his more recent notes show several successful interactions and occasions when staff were able to remove his leash without an issue. Outside of those stressful moments, his notes show glimpses of a fun, affectionate young dog who wants to engage, play and be close to his people.
