Memo 9/9/2026 09/09/26 16:56 Canine has demonstrated low tolerance for handling and other concerning behaviors during their time in care. Placement with a New Hope Partner is needed by close of business 9/14/26 to facilitate further behavioral evaluation and support. May be at risk for euthanasia 9/15/26 or sooner if warranted. Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 9/6/2026 Wide eyed, ears alert, tense bodied with some trembling in back legs on approach while laying on bed. No interest in coaxing but followed treat trail to front of kennel with tail tucked, very timid. Stayed at front of kennel as leash was presented, allowed for easy leash placement. Exited kennel erratically with strong pull, startled by reactive dogs in passing, tense bodied all the way to play yard. Once in yard dog would begin pacing/sniffing quickly before going potty, distant from handler at times but does check in for brief pets, quickly jumped up onto handler with front paws as handler sat on bench but quickly began exploring more right after, would tolerate pets when near handler but flinches when touched at times. Did have a moment of shaking off with some loose tail and softer body but became startled by loud noises outside of yard and flinched heavily with tail tucked, pacing between play yard exits, some hunched over body. No interest in treats or toys in yard. Came to handler when called over to exit, strong pull back to kennel with body and head low to ground, walked into kennel on own and allowed handler to remove leash by hand. 9/4/2026 Closed in for AM cleaning. Dog was sitting in back corner of kennel; ears back; whale eyed; tossed treats; not interested; handler opened kennel door; dog approached front; tail tucked; allowed for easy leash placement; exited; hard pull out of building; shifty eyes; kept looking back at handler; exited building; moderate pull; tail tucked; ears back. In yard, dog approached handler right away; sat next to handler; handler slowly pet; dog allowed for petting; dog moved in closer; placed front paws on handler; easy to redirect off; explored briefly; came back to handler; sat right in front of handler; back facing handler; allowed for petting; handler stood up; dog moved away; handler verbally coaxed; dog came back to handler; offered treats; not interested; light pacing; settled; panting; demonstrated sit; dog followed handler around yard for a few moments; tail tucked. Picked leash up; walked back with hard pull tail tucked; ears back; entered kennel; stood on bed; allowed handler to slowly remove leash. 9/3/2026 Dog was lying on kuranda bed on approach, slowly closed divider. Offered treats, would pin ears back while being whale eyed, did not come forward for treats. Leaned into kennel & leashed with a wide loop leash. Walked with tail tightly tucked under body, ears shifted back & body lowered while pulling hard on leash to small PY. Would be startled by noises from nearby kennels while walking by buildings. Would explore with nose to ground while keeping tail tightly tucked under body with whale eyes. Slowly approached handler on own, extended hand to pet, dog would quickly walk back then start to pace. After a few minutes handler would squeak a squeaker toy maker, dog would start to relax body more & approach handler again, allowed slow petting but would shift head back if moved to fast. Would place front paws onto handlers lap for a short period while being pet then would return to pacing. Not interested in treats. Picked up leash & attached a clip leash. Walked back to kennel with a hard pull on leash while keeping tail fully tucked under body, ears pinned fully back, mouth wide open while panting. Entered kennel quickly on own & retreated to kuranda bed. Handler would slowly verbally coax dog forward then reached into kennel to remove leash by hand, dog would start to pull back on leash, opted to remove leash by use of clip leash. 9/2/2026 Laying in middle of kennel with wide eyes, trembling body, frozen in place, would not move or approach handler. Needs full evaluation. 8/31/2026 tail tucking, walks on leash, allows all handling and petting, nervous around handlers and others around, moderate restraint for vaccine - muzzle wrap, hesitant of doorways Name: Cherry Animal ID: A5170857 Breed: GRAY/WHITE BULL TERRIER/MIX Sex: Female Age: 2Y 1M Weight: 40.6 lbs Kennel: West Kennel, Wing F - 173 Intake Date: 8/31/2026 Deadline Date: 9/14/2026
