Red is an adoptable male German Shepherd looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. He is fully grown and large in size. Red has a reported history of being loose and biting an individual on the inner thigh, reportedly causing bruising only. Our Behavior Team assessed him and observed fearful/offensive behavior. He was unable to calmly settle and engage during the assessment and required a double-leash setup. No further department assessments will be conducted. Any rescue interested in Red must be prepared to conduct its own evaluation after placement and assume responsibility for his care and management. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Lunging, baring teeth, vocalizing and medium tail wag on approach. At times he would not have direct eye contact, would hand target. Initially when I cracked the door open the retreated and then lunged or grabbed/held on to my leash briefly when I gave no resistance. After a few attempts to drop my leash on him I was able to get it on and he walked out without issue. Hard pull, some leash reactivity noted with staff engaged him from a distance (low growl/pulling). Once in the yard I kept him on leash, walked around. He mostly marked the yard, did not engage or seek attention from me. Very ball motivated. Could only briefly sit before jumping up towards the ball. Used two tennis balls, he appears to get the concept of dropping or trading. Kept on leash and able to pet/touch and perform handling \"exam\" without incident but he was more preoccupied with the environment (unable to calmly settle and engage me). Returned to kennel with a double leash. Once in the kennel, he resumed his fearfully offensive behavior-behavior would stop when I presented a tennis ball.
