A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Walter was on the outside of the kennel, but ran to the inside when the runner approached. The runner lowered the divider, and walked to the inside of the building. Walter was at the back of the kennel with a tense body, lowered posture, soft eyes, a closed mouth, and a tucked tail. The runner stepped into the kennel, and was able to leash him with no issues. He briefly began to panic and flail, but quickly settled on his own. He trailed behind the runner with a lowered body, and tried to hide under or behind any object in his path. He was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was slightly tense, and he laid down with his back toward the other dogs. He did not attempt to interact with the other dogs at the fence. The runner walked him into the yard, and he did not greet the other dogs. He scurried to the corner of the yard, where he sat with a slightly tense body and concerned eyes. He bared his teeth to move the other dogs away when they approached him, but did not escalate. He allowed the handler to pet him, but did not solicit affection. Walter is defensive with the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.
