Tweed is an adoptable male Cattle Dog looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - East in Mesa, Arizona. He is a young adult and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 4 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Tweed, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Placement with a New Hope Partner is needed by close of business 9/23/26 to facilitate further behavioral evaluation and support. May be at risk for euthanasia 9/24/26 or sooner if warranted. Unknown which specific dogs were at large and involved in incidents. Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 9/18/2026 Dog was in back of kennel with kennel mate, slowly started to come forward then retreated again with low body, handler closed divider and approached back of kennel, dog sat in back corner, tense, rounded posture, handler opened door and reached in leash, dog sat in divider doorway, tucking head low to the ground, handler draped it over head and secured, assistant leashed kennel mate, spent a few minutes tossing treats, trying to lure dogs to walk out, dog stayed at back of kennel, furrowed brow, handler brought taxi to kennel, would toss treats, dog would come forward slightly to take treats but not approach or enter taxi, handler removed taxi, assistant picked up kennel mate and took to a separate yard, handler stepped in and picked up this dog with towel, dog was tense, pressed up against wall, tolerated being carried to room. Handler placed dog in room, dog retreated to chair in corner, handler knelt on opposite side of room and laid out the towel, began tossing treats, dog would come forward, kept body and tail low, darting eyes, came up to handler and took treats from their hand, kept weight shifted back, tense and flinching with any movement, briefly laid on towel but startled by handler reaching for treats and backed away. Dog would stand and stare out of room, looking at kennels or nearby yard, tightly closed mouth, wide eyes, would disengage when handler spoke softly and offered treats. Handler spent a few minutes hand feeding dog, moving slowly, would attempt to pet, dog would lean back or flinch with any soft touch. Dog stayed near handler for treats, would walk away when they stopped feeding, shook off, kept watching out window. Handler called to dog and dog approached, took more treats gently, would sniff handler and stayed nearby, pausing and staring out window, handler pet along dogs side, dog had tense face, slight side eye to handler but remained in place and tolerated all touch, slight lean into neck scratches. Handler would feed dog after each instance of petting to keep positive associations. As handler stood up, dog retreated to corner, hunkered low, tense, handler approached and dog darted away, hiding under chair, handler slowly moved chair and picked up leash, dog was pacing in place trying to find an escape, handler gently covered with towel and lifted, carried back to kennel with no issues, removed leash by hand and placed dog back in kennel. 9/17/2026 Handler approached kennel front; This dog retreats to back where kennel mate was; Handlers closed guillotine and re approached; This dog was timid; dodgy ; pacing around in back of kennel; Handlers stepped in and assistant handler was able to leash kennel mate first; Lead handler stepped in and tried placing leash over head multiple times; Dog was hiding in small guillotine space; holding head to wall; making it difficult to leash; handler was able to place leash over head; used assistant handlers tool to scratch on along back and had dogs head move to be able to secure leash; dog was timid; tail tucked; ears pinned down; unsure; tipped taxi down and had to use light leash pressure into taxi; both dogs in taxi; this dog pancaked to ground; wheeled to near by M&G room; Once in room secured stoppers and dropped leash; this dog wouldn't get out of taxi quite yet; handler had to treat trail out; dog would retreat back in; handler took opportunity and pet lightly; dog allowed petting; handler gave more treats with petting; used light leash guidance out of taxi then dog was willing to explore room; walked around room as handlers tossed treats; handler would treat trail close and pet dog when in handlers vicinity; continued to pet throughout evaluation; Dog would come forward for treats; handler would pet inbetween; dog seemed more willing; still hesitant if assistant handler tried to pet; would shy away but take treats from assistant handler; dog allowed handler to pick up and set in lap; handler pet for a minute or so; dog seemed to tense up slightly as handler tried to relax him; handler set dog back down and gave treats; dog continued to walk room with kennel mate; would eat all treats tossed; very treat motivated; dog was neutral bodied and tail aligned; willing to approach handler for treats; when handler stood up; dogs seemed more wary of handlers standing up; handlers grabbed leash and dog would pull away slightly; handler would move chair and dog would freeze in place; allowed handler to pick up and set in taxi for kennel mate to follow in; kennel mate didn't go in with him in taxi; Once both dogs were in taxi; this dog remained laying down in taxi; allowed handler to add on clip lead for return; remained in taxi; Once taxi was tipped downward; dog exited; was able to remove leash by clip lead; 9/17/2026 kennel flirting, dog will approach handler with wagging tail. 9/9/2026 Caught on catch pole, alligator rolled, did not allow handling 9/9/2026 k9 was brought into ramp with dog taxi, k9 allowed slight handling, k9 was brought in with catch pole due to behaviro Name: Tweed Animal ID: A5171368 Breed: WHITE/BROWN AUST CATTLE DOG/MIX Sex: Male Age: 2Y 0M Weight: 26.0 lbs Kennel: East Kennel, Wing S - 204 Intake Date: 9/9/2026 Deadline Date: 9/23/2026
