Midnight Sky is an adoptable female Shepherd looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Midnight Sky, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

This beautiful girl is a playful, energetic sweetheart with a big personality and an even bigger love for toys! Once she's out of her kennel and in her element, Midnight Sky is a happy, bouncy girl who loves being outside, playing fetch, and zooming around the yard. She especially loves balls and toys and would be thrilled to have a person who enjoys getting out and playing with her. She also knows sit, is reportedly housetrained, and has had some volunteers calling her an absolute 10/10! Midnight Sky can be a little excitable and strong on leash, especially when she's excited, so she'll benefit from someone who is comfortable handling a larger, energetic dog and is willing to continue working on her leash skills. She does best when handlers move slowly and give her time to process what's happening, particularly during transitions and when returning to her kennel. She is very food motivated and has shown that treats can be a great way to keep her engaged and help her focus. When it comes to other dogs, Midnight Sky is dog selective and reactive, so she will need to be the only dog in her home. She has participated in playgroups and has had some successful, playful interactions with other dogs, including play bows, loose body language, and appropriate pauses. However, she has also shown that she can become overwhelmed or too intense with some dogs and has had concerning interactions when another dog did not want to engage. Because of this, careful management and continued support around other dogs will be important. Because of her size, energy level, sensitivity to fast movements, and the intensity she can sometimes bring to her interactions, we feel Midnight Sky would be most successful in an adult-only home with no children. Her ideal adopter will be someone who can give her structure, patience, and plenty of opportunities for exercise and enrichment while allowing her to settle in at her own pace. In return, you'll have a fun, goofy girl who loves toys, treats, playtime, and being the center of attention! Was difficult to remove with the dog in the kennel and me on the outside, so I brought it out and held its collar and adjusted my green leash but in the process with jumping, it knocked down my treat pouch, and then he picked up. An ACA and other staff came to help to remove the treat bag from its mouth. Then we turned the corner to walk toward the exit and my foot slipped on water and I accidentally stepped on the dog's foot. He understandably reacted to that by put his mouth around my lower leg, did not bite nor apply pressure. Pulled moderately, Pulled Hard, Fixated on other dogs Yes, I handled the dog. Pet his back and upper neck while in hallway waiting for photo shoot. He had a ball in his mouth and was watching another dog down the hall. Hopped into kennel after the treat and in doing so stepped through the leash (used clip method). Was a cone treat so waited a few moments and toss it another treat to get the leash out from under his legs Loves tennis balls. Will run after them and if has one in its mouth, may or may not switch. When had a tennis ball in its mouth it did not bark or snap at dogs across the fence. Instead he just looked at them and continued. In his kennel he is jumping hard against the kennel door when dogs walk by. Per staff on 9/20: Volunteer noted that Midnight sky was hard barking at dogs past the yard, and when the past by his kennel. Per staff 9/20: Leash got caught around neck and shoulder really hype Jumping on the door- excited, Trying to push past you I don't know No, I did not handle the dog. Dog got leashed around neck and shoulder. Handler tried to get leash around neck by holding collar. That's when dog grabbed treat pouch off of handler and wouldn't release it. After being pulled back by Handlr dog dropped pouch I was able to kick it out of reach. Then dog started to bite at handlers ankles out of what I interpreted as frustration. Did not latch on and only for a few moments. Once pulled back with leash stopped and was able to be walked out of kennels Per staff 9/15: In ISO playgroup today came in the yard with Gypsy with a tense body, high still tail, ears forward. Started putting her head over Gypsy's neck. Gypsy started to move away and Midnight started growling and snapping at her. Midnight Sky pinned Gypsy her down on her back snarling with her mouth over Gypsy's neck as Gypsy was yelping. Adding bad dog meet and dog selective/reactive Playgroup 8/31: Forward, fast-moving, rough & rowdy playstyle. Overwhelmed Sunshine a bit with persistent physical play and received an appropriate vocal correction. Removed from yard shortly afterward. Per staff 8/30 (Regarding meet with Orion): Good greetings. Play bows, spin moves and bouncy moves. Loose body. Play pauses Per staff 8/30: Kennel Presentation: At the front with soft eyes, ears for and mid tail not moving. Leash Skills: Once leash was present her tail began to wag. Easy to leash and came right out of kennel. Mild pulling on the leash and zig zagging. Sociability: As we made out way out to the playgroup yard we stood off to the side she gently jumped up on me with a loose body, soft eyes, opened relaxed mouth allowing all handling. Later in the day I asked another staff member to take her out for a dog meet. He was able to pet her and she leaned into handling. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: Met Orion. Loose body, play bows, spin moves and good breaks. Return to Kennel: Staff member who had her out reported he had to step in with one foot for her to follow. Clip the leash and slipped it off. Color Level: Exp Gold Playgroup 8/30: Steer test: 2/5 with water and 0/5 with can Good gate greetings. Zoomies around the yard. Loose body, play-bows and pauses. Per staff 8/30: During my morning walk through midnight sky was at the front with soft eyes, ears forward high tail. Took a treat gently from my hand Per staff 8/29: Midnight Sky came into Intake with a tense body, tail high and wagging, leaning into ACA. ACA said to not approach since he was holding her in Flex space and had tried to snap at medical staff member. ACA was able to look into ears but then when reaching over her head she turned quickly and whined. I was able to throw hot dog in a treat trail to get onto scale and then offered in my hand and took it gently. Decided double leash would be best and we were able to vaccinate with that and a lick mat with cream cheese with no problems or reaction to vaccines. We were able to distract consistently with hot dog and meatballs for physical but when going to put collar on I had ACA distract and when going to clip it Midnight turned and nipped my quickly on the hand and released, no skin broken only a red mark but seemed to be more handler oriented as he let ACA do it with no issues. Very food motivated! Per staff 8/29: \"Tense standing at the door, took treats gently from my fingers. Showed the leash, began to circle, tail came up, ears back and soft eyes. Easy to leash. Pulls hard, loose body outside, able to touch, likes cheese. A second handler approached to help me scan for a chip, pulled intensely towrds him, high tail, sniffed, jumped repeatedly with open mouth at his arm, appeared pushy and playful. quickly sat for a treat when it was presented. Tolerant for chip scan, nose bopped scanner twice. Loose tongue, soft eyes, wiggle butt. Saw dogs passing by, stared with loose face and body. Easy to place back in kennel. Alerted medical team dog appears ready for check in.\" Per staff 8/28: During my morning walk through midnight sky was at the front she hard barked with ears forward and wide eyes. I offered a treat and she ate them. Per staff 8/27: When doing walkthrough pt was lunging, hard barking, baring teeth. TTA slip in kennel card and scheduled on Trazodone. Estimated at 60lbs. Per staff 8/27: During my morning walk through Midnight sky did a deep alert bark and back up. Her hackles her raises, wide eyes/darting and ears going form side to back. I tossed in some high value treats, she slowly came up to eat them. I tossed in some more she did short low barks and then came forward to eat them. Per staff 8/26: Was inside a crate upon arrival. Barked heavily when I knocked. When I walked inside she began snapping and hard barking charging the front of the cage. I stepped outside and the caller had to leash her to avoid putting her on the pole. Once he handed me the leash she kept a distance from me. I let her approach and get used to me before trying to pet, she tolerated it but then stepped away. Before attempting to put her in the truck she grabbed the leash and began tugging it. Walked her around the truck and had to quickly suitcase her to get her in the back.
