A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. Mason was lying down at the back of the kennel with a tense body, concerned eyes, and a tucked tail. He tried to follow his kennel mate out of the kennel, but the runner stepped in front of him to leash him. He would not walk, and began snapping and chewing the leash when any pressure was placed on the leash. The runner used the leash to gently muzzle him, and then carried him to the rolling cart. The runner moved slowly and was able to collar him. He entered the yard, and did not greet the other dogs. He immediately ran to the pool, where he hid with a tense, trembling body for his entire stay in the yard. He trembled ad slightly bared his teeth any time the handler approached him. Mason is defensive with the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. He would not move away from the pool or his kennel mate, so the handler used the Assess-A-Hand for the assessment. His body was tense and trembling, his eyes were wide, and his tail was tucked. He turned his body away whenever the handler touched him, but quickly began to bare his teeth and snap at the Assess-A-Hand. The assessment was ended after a few minutes, and he was returned to his kennel using the rolling cart.
