Bruce

Bruce is an adoptable male Shepherd looking for a home at NYC ACC-Queens in Ridgewood, New York. He is fully grown and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to behavior. Adopting Bruce, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Pre-Screener Form Bruce is at risk due to behavioral concerns from his previous home and behaviors during his stay in care. Bruce's previous owner reported general anxiety, resource guarding, handling sensitivity, and reactivity toward people and dogs. During his stay in care, Bruce has displayed similar behaviors. He has escalated to lunging at people and other dogs during walks and can be difficult to refocus his fixation. He has also been reported to jump at the second person who accompanies the main handler walking him to assist in managing his reactivity. His previous owner reported that he enjoys lounging on the couch to watch TV and going on long walks. Bruce has recently begun to kennel fight with other dogs as he passes their room. Medically. Bruce is apparently healthy. Bruce was surrendered by his previous owner because they were disabled and not being able to continue caring for him. According to his owner, Bruce is social and affectionate, enjoys being where people are, enjoys playing ball, going for walks, and relaxing with his person while watching television, and his family reports that he allows them to bathe and brush him. Bruce does have several behavioral concerns reported by his previous owner, and that has been displayed during his stay in care. Including resource guarding of food, treats, and toys, anxiety, sensitivity to handling and restraint in some situations; and reactivity toward unfamiliar people and dogs, including barking, growling, lunging, and fixation. Bruce would benefit from placement through a New Hope partner in an experienced, adult-only home that can provide a calm, structured environment and continued positive behavioral support. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.
