Coco

Coco is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a young adult and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to other. Adopting Coco, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Coco A2150388 was originally picked up by one of our officers. The person who surrendered her explained that the family no longer had the financial means, time, or ability to safely contain her. Coco was loaded onto the kennel truck without incident. Multiple neighbors approached our truck to share that Coco is a sweet dog who was frequently loose in the neighborhood and expressed that they hoped she could find a better-suited home. Medical: Coco appears to be approximately 4 years old. She is heartworm negative, spayed, and up to date on vaccines. She is currently receiving treatment for dermatitis. Behavior Notes: Coco is shy and affectionate and can be easily redirected with a squirt bottle. She has successfully socialized and engaged in play with multiple dogs, including push-and-pull play. She has also shown that she may become uncomfortable when play becomes too intense and can give strong corrections when another dog is overly pushy or rough. There have been a couple of incidents where Coco escalated during interactions with other dogs, including an incident in which she bit another dog's foot and caused a small scratch to the dog's rear leg. She may benefit from being introduced to calmer, gentler playgroups with careful monitoring and continued positive socialization. Volunteer Notes: Coco is slightly shy and quiet when first introduced but warms up quickly. She was described as a sweetheart who tolerated handling well, including her bath, despite being unsure of the new environment. She walks very nicely on leash and is attentive to her handler when changing directions. She was non-reactive around dogs, children, and people while out of the shelter. In a new home environment, she was initially anxious and unsure for about 15 minutes before settling in and becoming very relaxed. Coco appears to benefit from a little patience and time when introduced to new places and experiences. Staff Notes: Shy and affectionate. Request to Rescues: Coco is in urgent need of rescue as she continues to struggle with the shelter environment, including repeatedly reacting to and attempting to destroy the kennel barriers when people or dogs pass by. We have modified her housing as much as possible, but the behavior continues. Coco would benefit from a quieter environment, focused training for her barrier reactivity, and continued guidance with appropriate dog socialization. A rescue placement would allow her to decompress and receive the individualized support she needs outside of the shelter environment.
