Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behaviormay change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. She was tense with wide eyes but tolerated the runner clasping the collar around her neck. She remained tense while greeting a few dogs through the fence. She calmly entered the yard, taking slow steps with wide eyes and ears back. She tolerated a few dogs coming up to greet her but tumed her head away and would not retum any greetings. She was wary of the handlers and kept her distance, quickening her pace to avoid them. As time passed, she began trusting the handlers and eventually came up to them for affection. She was enticed for play by a male pit bull who also pawed and jumped on her side. She declined his invitation and did not react to his contact. As time passed, she relaxed and began approaching the other dogs, exchanging good greetings, and exploring the yard with a few. The male pit bull almost convinced her for play as she tapped her paws and pranced a few times, but full play did not erupt. She was readily approaching the handlers by the end of play yard to solicit affection. She needs confidence building and further socialization. She remained loose with an open mouth pant while the handler looked in her ears, viewed her teeth, and held each of her paws. She lightly flinched and briefly tucked her tail as the handler touched it but quickly relaxed and resumed seeking affection. She did not display any negative or conceming behavior during the assessment. She needs further socialization and an initial go slow approach to build trust.
