Dexter is an adoptable male Poodle looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. He is a young adult and small in size. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Dexter was at the rear of the kennel with a tense demeanor barking defensively at the handler. Dexter was avoidant of the handler and was difficult to leash/remove from the kennel. Dexter was placed in a blanket and was carried to the play yard and was given time to decompress. Dexter displayed tense body, closed mouth, ears back, tucked tail, and soft eyes. Dexter remained avoidant of the handler barking/snapping defensively at them. The handler used the assessment hand and was unable to pet/handle Dexter as he nipped/snapped at the assessment hand and moved away from the handler. Dexter was unable to be handled, and the assessment was stopped as to not further stress him. Dexter was returned to his kennel without incident. Dexter is recommended to be made available to rescue only medium energy level.
