August is an adoptable female Border Collie looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is senior and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to medical. Adopting August, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.
August ACCT-A-262684 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. August must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2ND at 10AM. Should August's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. August is an 11-year-old senior dog who came to ACCT Philly on September 28th after her family became concerned about a recent decline in her health. She is an incredibly affectionate and gentle senior who loves companionship and has been happy to meet new people. Since arriving, August has been relaxed and tolerant with handling, leaning into staff for pets and happily accepting treats. Her family reports that she has lived with children of all ages, cats, and small dogs and loves them all. August has incomplete cataracts and severe dental disease requiring a dental with extractions, along with some other medical issues. Due to her medical concerns, August is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner. VIDEOS: August loves pets: Stormi and August Meet: BEHAVIOR NOTES: Per staff 9/29:Kennel Presentation: Laying at the front of her kennel sleeping. Woke up when I talked to her, loose mid tail wags, ears to the side, loose body. Took a treat through the bars. Leash Skills: Easy to leash. Allowed to be picked up with soft eyes, ears back, loose body. Once on the ground walked loose leash, needed help guiding her through doorways due to being blind. Sociability: Would come over when I talked to her with a loose body, mid tail wags. Allowed all handing and leaned into me. Food motivated and took treats. Dog Interaction: Met Stormii, tolerant of being sniffed and moving away on her own. Return to Kennel: Walked back loose leash. Allowed being picked up with a loose body to place in her top bank. Leash was removed easily by hand. Color Level: Gold Per staff 9/29: Went up to kennel, August stood up when I said hi, and was wagging her tail, I opened the kennel door and she sniffed my hand and solicited pets. Per owner surrender notes 9/28: Has lived with cats, small dogs, and kids of all ages. Loves strangers, children, cats, and dogs. Per owner 9/24: She is extremely affectionate and lovely. Most gentle dog. At one point she was very energetic even during her seniors years but most recently have become more mellow. The best thing about her is her desire for companionship. She lives with adults, teenagers, and cats. MEDICAL NOTES: 9/29 Vet Exam: Incomplete cataracts in both eyes. Mucoid discharge from left eye. Severe periodontal disease. Grade II heart murmur. Diffuse muscle wasting. Pink raised mass on left ear. Elevated ALP. Prescribed eye medication. Promote to rescue for expedited exit from the shelter. Per owner 9/24: August's health has deteriorated quickly overly the last 6 weeks. She is extremely weak; not eating, voiding on herself, and appears to be experiencing vision loss suddenly. She's walking in circles and into things. 4/25 Offsite Vet Exam: Pink, raised wart like lesion of outer pinna of left ear. Marked periodontal disease with large amounts of tartar and dental calculus, upper canines loose and uncomfortable when palpated. Moderate gingivitis. No foreign objections, masses, or petechiae. Over conditions BCS 8/9. Based on history and physical exam findings, expressed concern for severe periodontal disease and gingivitis causing the bleeding from August's mouth. Recommended starting clindamycin to help reduce gingivitis and bacterial load while awaiting dental procedure. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
