About Luki

Luki is an adoptable male Poodle looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and small in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Luki, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Luki ACCT-A-261545 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Luki must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Luki's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Luki is a 2-year-old small mixed-breed dog who came to ACCT Philly as an owner surrender on September 11th after his family moved to an apartment that does not allow pets. His owner described him as a friendly, lovable boy who just needs some time to get comfortable with new people. When Luki first arrived, he was very unsure of handling and being leashed, and would growl, snap, or try to back away when he felt pressured. With time and a slower approach, he has started to show a much softer side of himself. Luki is a sweet, food-motivated guy who does best when given time to settle in and build trust. He loves treats, takes them gently, walks on a loose leash, and has been seen wiggling at the front of his kennel and following his handler around the yard. He has even tucked himself under a handler's legs to relax. Luki knows sit, has been easy to pick up and carry, and has shown that he can warm up quickly once he feels comfortable, though he can still be sensitive to leash pressure and some handling. Due to his behavioral concerns, Luki is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter who will give him time, space, and a calm approach. VIDEOS: Luki & Lucky Boy Meet 9/16 Luki gets pets: 9/16 Zooka meets Luki: 9/16 Zooka meets Luki loose: BEHAVIOR NOTES: Per staff 10/3: Appeared loose and excited to go out when I approach (had not been out in 2 days). Easy to leash, pick up, and carry outside. Sniffed around and explored but did not potty. I squatted next to him and he sat close to me, continuing to allow all handling. He saw someone in the distance and started spinning and jumping around. Walked back into the building and he was easy to pick up and return. We were only outside for about five minutes, but he did not go to the bathroom. Per staff 9/30: Staff moving him out of ISO notes that he gave them no issues carrying him to his new kennel. Per staff 9/22: At the front of his crate, loose wiggly body, ears back, soft eyes. Took a treat gently. Wiggly when leashing, able to leash with a treat lure. Came right out and walked loose leash with mid to high tail wags and a loose body. Pulled back on the leash when we approached the grass, it was raining, we went to the sidewalk and he walked right into the yard. In the yard, came over when called, loose body, ears back. Tolerated handling and shook off afterwards. When touching his lower side he did a closed mouth head turn with a tenser body, low still tail and wide eyes then moved away. Eating on and off outside. Saw Jorge through the fence, loose body, ears back, mid to high tail wags. Would not eat when Jorge was in the yard across from us. Walked back loose leash. Able to easily clip my leash. When approaching his room he started to slow down, picked up the pace with a jog and we made it to his crate where he started to buck back and flail on the leash. I went back with him once he stopped, offered a treat, no longer eating. Jogged to his crate and needed leash pressure to go in. Per staff 9/17: 9/16 opened cage door, put loop of snappy snare over his head and he walked out. Walked him to dog intake, he would stop at times, noticed he had a slight limp. We went into dog intake, I left door open to room. I went over and just let him sniff around. At times I would pet his back, and he would stand still, a few times he seemed to tense up but was not reactive. He ate a cube of cheese I put out for him. I scanned him for a chip and he continued to sniff the floor while I did so. Took him outside, I put a small ecollar on him loosely. He didn't react even when it got a little stuck at first. I pinched his skin as though to give a vaccine and he did not stiffen, just stood still. I stepped on the leash and tried to vaccinate but as soon as needle was felt he turned and tried to bite, however as soon as I took my foot off the leash he stopped. Let him sniff around and then put a box in front of my leg, and stepped on leash but with a lot of leeway and another staff member stood and made noises to distract him, I got one vaccine in and then he turned and snapped but again as soon as pressure was off leash he stopped. Tried again after letting walk it off but as he was already scheduled for surgery, but he turned and snapped when I pinched skin this time so stopped trying since he can get fully checked in while sedate. His reactivity while with me appeared to be triggered by when leash would tighten around his neck, or when I had to pull on it to get him into his kennel. Even put collar on prior to putting ecollar on and he continued to sniff around while I did so. Per staff 9/16: ACA indicated when attempting to clean using a shield, dog charged at shield and him. Per staff 9/15: Attempted check in today, Luki greeted me at the front of his kennel with a high wagging tail and loose body. I offered him a treat which he took gently. Dodged the leash at first, able to leash with a treat lure and he came right out. Walked loose leash with a loose body and a high wagging tail, would pull back and buck on leash if pressure as applied. In the intake room he would only eat hotdogs that I handed to him. Needed to move the scale away from the wall and light leash pressure to get him on it. Sniffed around the room with a high wagging tail, ears back and to the side, tenser body. Tolerated handling from me on his neck, back and upper sides at first. When scanning for a microchip he started to low growl and bear his teeth. Attempted to use a towel and bear hug for vaccines, would growl, head whip, flail and snap when touching his lower side and under side. After attempting to bear hug with the towel, would be tense and lip lick with a high still tail when attempting handling. We tried an e-collar which he growled then snapped at. Decided to call it there and we hung out in a quiet room while his kennel was being spot checked. He knows sit and allowed gentled handling from me on his neck and back again. Started to pace and whine after a few minutes and allowed me to clip my leash with a lip lick. Walked back to the small dog room with a high wagging tail and ears back. Once in the room started to pull back on the leash, I stopped and he stood still briefly then tried a jog to his kennel where he started bucking again, tried a treat which he sniffed and did not eat and needed leash pressure to return. Per staff 9/14: Kennel Presentation: When I walked into the small dog room was at the front of his kennel hard barking, high wagging tail, ears back. As I got closer lunged forward at the bars. I tossed in a treat which he ate and stopped barking. Was bearing teeth, tossed another which he ate and then offered one which he took gently. Leash Skills: Backed up when I put my leash in kennel and started low growling and bearing teeth. I offered a treat which he ate and was able to leash with a treat lure. Backed up when leashed with wide eyes, ears back, tail low. Needed a treat trail to exit kennel. Once out walked wide eyes darting, tail low, ears pinned back, tense body, would head whip when there was leash pressure. Sociability: In the yard was heavy panting with wide eyes and a low tail. Followed me around and allowed handling with wide eyes, tail low, ears back, heavy panting. When touching his lower side he did a slow head turn with a closed mouth. I sat on the bench and he went under my legs and laid down. Not eating outside. We hung out in the eval room while waiting for his kennel to be cleaned and he sniffed around with a high tail, ears back, wide eyes and panting. Took treats gently in the eval room. Play: Would sniff at toys with a stretch out tense body, ears back, wide tail, tail tucked and flinched moving back when one moved. Dog Interaction: Met Mako, snarling and low growling, not approaching. Return to Kennel: Bucked back when trying to leave the yard, needed to follow the other handling and paused a few more times bucking back. Tried a different door which he went through. Once inside walked to his kennel with a high wagging tail, ears back, wide eyes, panting. Stopped outside his kennel and started bucking on leash again for a few seconds then stopped. Able to clip my leash and he hopped in with a jog up to his kennel. Color Level: Exp Blue once checked in Recommendations and considerations: Go slow and use treats, liked hot dogs. Per staff 9/12: When attempting to remove from kennel patient appears to be calm. When I tried to place leash patient would avoid leashing. Used snappy snare and was able to place over head. When trying to persuade patient out of kennel started biting the stick of the snare, had to use metal hook to remove snare. Luki also bit and latched onto the metal hook used to remove snare. For safety of animal and myself, Luki was not able to be checked in will attempt again once medication has had time to take affect. Per owner surrender notes 9/11: He is friendly and a good boy he just have to get familiar to the people. Not housebroken or crate trained. High energy. Behavior concerns: At the first he going to feel strange but after 2 hour he going to be good a lovely, please get good people for him. MEDICAL NOTES: Luki'is currently being treated for an upper respiratory infection (URI) or \"doggy cold.\" URIs are contagious to other dogs, but not to people or other types of animals. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
