Lucky Boy
Chihuahua
Urgent: 1 Day Left
Scheduled: October 5, 2026
Reason: Behavior
Lucky Boy is an adoptable male Chihuahua looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and small in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Lucky Boy, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.
Lucky Boy ACCT-A-257303 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Lucky Boy must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Lucky Boy's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Lucky Boy first came to ACCT Philly on August 1st as an owner surrender after his owner became ill. He was adopted the following day, but returned on September 15th after his adopter reported behavioral concerns, including a bite when she tried to get him into his crate. Since returning to the shelter, Lucky Boy has often appeared very nervous and shut down, but he has also shown that he can be gentle and cooperative with patient handling. Lucky Boy may be tense and avoidant in the shelter, but he walks beautifully on leash, has been easy to leash and handle, and has tolerated being picked up without reacting. Once outside, he has allowed pets and enjoys butt rubs, and he seems housetrained. He has also shown some interest in calmly meeting other dogs. Due to his behavioral concerns, Lucky Boy is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter who can give him time to decompress and help him build confidence while providing appropriate behavioral support and structure. VIDEOS: Scared Lucky Boy: Luki & Lucky Boy Meet BEHAVIOR NOTES: Per staff 10/3:'Whining when I was in front of the kennel. Easy to leash and pick up. Peed as soon as he got to the grass (didn't go on the concrete). Avoidant of other dogs at first, but tolerated some sniffs. Also pooped while outside. Seems very housetrained. No issues handling. Per volunteer 10/1:'Lucky Boy hadn't been out in several days. He is in a top surgical kennel in the back, he has been crying when people walk by, and he does have a cold. I used a towel to cover him and lift him out, and he didn't react at all. He was fine, no growling, no head snapping, not shaking.'I carried him to the cold yard. I let him wander around. He was fine. He seems to be trying to stay house trained.'I was able to pet him in the yard, and I did use the the towel again to pick him up. He didn't react when I was petting his head and under his chin, and he wasn't shaking. I had no problem putting him back into his kennel. Per volunteer 9/24: Low energy. Nervous but friendly after warming up. Loves cheeseburger treats and butt rubs. Per volunteer 9/20:'I approached his kennel and he was looking at me with wide eyes and a bit of a curled lip. I dropped some pepperoni which he wasn't interested in taking and then I opened the door and easily looped him with a big loop of my leash. On leash, he walks amazingly. Pretty tense body the whole time we were out and did not solicit any handling for me. Spent most of the time outside looking around and shaking with wide eyes and a stiff body. Never showed any interest in treats. I tossed him a very tiny toy, and he went over to sniff it out, however, didn't pick it up or play with it. He's pretty shut down in the shelter environment. Went back into his kennel with some leash pressure, wide eyes when I clipped his leash. Per staff 9/18:Kennel Presentation: Sitting at the front of the kennel. soft/wide eyes, ears forward and neutral body. Offered a treat which he did not eat. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and hesitated to come out. I spoke softly and he came out. Walks on a loose leash. Sociability: Asocial. Did not solicit for pets, moving away and tense body when I did slightly pet his back side. Not eating any treats. Dog Interaction: Met Riya. Sniffed at a distance and then moved away. Return to Kennel: Hesitated to go back, pulling back on the leash. Due to his owner notes I used caution with light leash pressure. Had the leash clipped and slipped it off. Color Level: Blue Per staff 9/16: He was very calm for handling he squirmed for shots but didn't try to bite or growl or show teeth or anything he did fine. Per owner surrender notes 9/15: Housetrained. Working on crate training. High energy. Don't follow commands aggressive and reactive bites growls when told what to do. Barks at strangers and children. Not sure how he is with cats. Per staff conversation with owner 9/15: Owner said she \"doesn't have the patience\" when I offered training. Said it's \"his way or no way\". Bite occurred on the 6th to the owner. Was told to go to his crate, leaning over him \"trying to get him to go\" (said she was not pushing him or anything) and he turned around and bit her. Bit on her palm, did break skin. Did not need medical attention. Let go right after biting - owner said it was because she screamed, then he went and hid. Per owner 9/15: I adopted a dog about a little over 30 days first few weeks was okay, last week he bite me and i thought maybe with a little patience and training he would get better, but he's stubborn and bites and growls when he isn't interested in doing something I need to surrender him. Per owner 9/11: Dog is stubborn and bit me. Has a stubborn personality. The best things about him are he is playful and loves outside. He don't want to listen and if it's something he doesn't want to do he bites. Per owner surrender notes 8/1: Good dog. Fully housetrained. Partially crate trained. High energy. Knows commands. Walks ok on leash. Ok with strangers, children, and dogs. Not good with cats. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
