About Birgi

Birgi is an adoptable female Siberian Husky looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a young adult and medium in size. She is listed on the shelter's euthanasia list, listed due to medical, and that date has now passed. Shelters often move these dates, so Birgi may still be waiting. The shelter can confirm.

Birgi ACCT-A-264338 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Birgi must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by Saturday, October 10th 2026 at 10AM. Should Birgi's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Meet Birgi, a sweet young girl with a big heart and so much love to give! Not even a year old, Birgi has already been through more than any puppy should. She was found tied to a pole and brought to the shelter by police, and now she's hoping someone will step up to give her the second chance she deserves. Despite everything, Birgi has shown herself to be a friendly, affectionate girl who seeks out attention and pets from her human friends. She has a loose, wiggly body, a wagging tail, and is happy to lean in for affection. She has tolerated handling well and has even shown off her gentle side when accepting treats! Birgi can be a little unsure of new things at first, including having a leash put on, but with patience, encouragement, and a gentle approach, she's able to find her footing. She walks nicely on leash and has been easy to guide back to her kennel. She has also had some polite initial interactions with other dogs, though she may be a bit hesitant when they get close. Slow, thoughtful introductions will help her feel safe and comfortable as she settles into her next chapter. Birgi urgently needs a rescue partner due to significant medical concerns affecting both of her eyes. Her eyes are enlarged, her left eye may have a displaced lens, and her right cornea is cloudy. She appears to have substantial vision impairment and has been prescribed medication to help keep her comfortable. An urgent evaluation by a veterinary ophthalmologist is recommended, and she will likely need surgery to remove both eyes. Despite these challenges, Birgi remains bright, responsive, and eager for human connection. She deserves the chance to receive the specialized care she needs and grow into the happy, carefree young dog she should be. Birgi is still just a puppy with her whole life ahead of her. She needs a rescue partner who can provide urgent ophthalmology care, patience, and a safe place to land. In return, she has so much affection and companionship to offer. Can your rescue step up for Birgi and give this deserving girl the chance at a brighter future? Videos: Petting Birgi: Brigi and Rose Meet: Behavior Notes: Per staff 10/8/26: Kennel Presentation: Laying on her bed when I approached. Came to the front when I started talking to her with ears back and a low loose tail. Took a treat gently then took it to her bed and spit it out. Leash Skills: Let her sniff the leash first, dodged it when it touched her. Made a large loop and able to leash. Came out slowly and walked loose leash with low tail, ears back, head lower. Sociability: Would come over when I called to her with low loose tail and ears back. Allowed all handling with mid loose tail wags and a loose body, leaning into me. Got lightly mouthy once, stopped when I moved away. Not eating outside. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: Met Rose, good fence greetings. Face to face, sniffed, moved away with a hunched body and ears pinned back when being sniffed. Return to Kennel: Walked back loose leash, with tail low, ears back, head lower. Paused once, kept moving with baby talk. Hopped right into her kennel and leash was removed by hand. Color Level: Exp Gold Per staff 10/8/26: Very friendly! Seeks attention and pets. Loose boy, wagging tail. Tolerated all handling and exam. 10/8: Birgi was found tied to a pole and was transported to the shelter by police Medical Notes: 10/8/26: Birgi is bright, alert, and responsive, with an otherwise largely unremarkable physical exam. Her primary medical concerns involve both eyes, which are enlarged (bilateral buphthalmos), with suspected lens luxation in the left eye and cloudiness of the right cornea. Her pupillary light responses are slow in both eyes, and her response to visual stimuli is absent in the right eye and inconsistent in the left, suggesting significant vision impairment. Birgi has been prescribed gabapentin twice daily for comfort. An urgent exit from the shelter for evaluation by a veterinary ophthalmologist is recommended, as she will likely require surgical removal of both eyes (bilateral enucleation). ' Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
