A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Panther was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Panther displayed a neutral body, closed mouth, natural ear set, low tail with a soft wag, and soft eyes. Panther appeared wary of the handler and moved away from them. The handler used a slow approach and held onto Panther's leash, giving him time to acclimate to the handler. The handler was able to pet Panther, and he quickly became loose/wiggly. Panther shifted his body to solicit scratches on his hind area leaning his rear into the handler's touch. Panther allowed the handler to examine his ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail with ease. Panther continued to solicit petting post assessment specifically leaning his hind area for scratched/petting. Panther could benefit from further socialization and confidence building. Panther could also benefit from a slow and patient introduction. Panther is ok for public adoption adults only required at this time (+KHOA reported animal aggression in previous home) medium energy level calm dogs recommended.
