A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. Simon A5521664 (Altered) was at the front of the kennel next to his kennel mate, trembling and nervous. The runner coaxed him, causing him to gradually relax and wiggle his body. Simon then approached the barrier to sniff the runner's hand. He was easily leashed and exited the kennel on his own. He led the way to the catch pen with a light pull on the leash, bypassing his neighboring kennels. Simon became reactive inside the catch pen, growling and muzzle punching the fence when being approached by some of the dogs. A muzzle was placed on Simon as a precaution, along with a collar and leash prior to entering the yard. He entered the yard with a tense posture, growling at the dogs to signal a need for personal space. He chose to isolate himself from the group, appearing tense and continuing to growl at the dogs that played in his vicinity without escalating further. Simon preferred interacting with the handlers instead, occasionally approaching to solicit petting. For the rest of the session, he kept to himself, tolerating the other dogs from a distance. A calm companion who respects his boundaries is strongly recommended, allowing him to interact at his own comfort level.
