About Sir Henry

Sir Henry is an adoptable female Rat Terrier looking for a home at NYC ACC-Queens in Ridgewood, New York. She is senior and small in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Sir Henry, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Sir Henry is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Sir Henry has only allowed handling from familiar handlers; she readily seeks attention and engages in play with toys, especially playing fetch. She has escalated to defensive behaviors with unfamiliar handlers - lunging, snapping, lip curling - during handling and when attempting to remove her from the kennel for walks. On one occasion, she did nip a handler's hand when she began squirming while being carried, leaving red marks on the back of their left hand. Medically, Sir Henry has luxating patellas and would benefit from a dental after placement. Sir Henry came into the care center as a stray and we have no history on her behavior in a home environment. During her stay in the care center, she has shown high levels of fear, potential for defensive aggression, and handling sensitivity. During her medical exam, she displayed whale eye, bared teeth, and snapped at staff when they attempted to collar her. When being handled, she has shown conflicted behavior; while she has shown social behavior with staff and solicits attention, she has also snapped at at a handler after previously allowing handling. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement in an adult-only home through a New Hope partner. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
