Urgent: Last Day
Scheduled: October 24, 2026
Reason: Other
Strider is an adoptable male Chocolate Labrador Retriever looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is a young adult and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to other. Adopting Strider, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.
Intake Info: Strider and Archer were removed from very poor living conditions and have now been here since mid-June. They are heartworm positive and are at the point where they need to start their heartworm treatment. PBCACC can provide the medication for the heartworm treatment with a qualifying vet providing the treatment through our Rescue Hearts program. Please contact us for more info. Medical: Strider ' heartworm positive, history of interdigital infection which was successfully treated. Currently under observation for possible symptoms of CIRD. Vaccinated and neutered. HS-4 Archer ' heartworm positive, history of CIRD last month, currently healthy. HS-4 Behaviors Observed: Strider was initially fearful and flighty, often looking for an exit, and benefits from calm, gentle handling. He has since shown improvement and is now easy to leash and handle by staff and volunteers, tolerating petting and passing his Healing Hearts assessment with people and dogs. He is slightly shy but approachable, walks on leash with some pulling, and generally prefers to explore and sniff the yard rather than engage in play. He has demonstrated appropriate communication with other dogs, including giving polite corrections when play became too rough, though he has shown some stiffness and raised hackles when greeting certain dogs. Overall, Strider is a good-natured, somewhat reserved dog who would benefit from a patient approach and positive introductions to new dogs. Archer was initially very fearful and sensitive to movement and pressure, requiring slow, gentle handling. He has since become more comfortable with staff and handling, tolerating full-body touch and showing increased confidence in the yard. He enjoys socializing and engaging in push-pull play with many dogs, although he can become sexually motivated and persistent with mounting. Archer has also displayed selective dog reactivity, including stiff body language, hard stares, growling, and difficulty disengaging from certain dogs, particularly some males. He has been involved in multiple altercations and may be difficult to redirect when tension arises, so careful dog selection, close supervision, and proactive management are important. Request to Rescues: Thes two boys need urgent rescue placement due to their heartworm status. They are approaching their four-month anniversary of arriving at the shelter and they need to start their heartworm treatment ASAP. They need a rescue who can place them in a calm and safe home and get them started on their treatment. PBCACC has the Rescue Hearts program though which we can provide the medication with a qualifying vet administering the treatment. Please contact us for more information. They do not need to leave together. Animal ID\tA2336235 Color\tBrown Sex\tNeutered Male Size\tMedium Weight\t45 lbs. Age\t3 Years
