A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. Herman A5805860 (Altered) had a timid demeanor upon the runner's arrival but approached with some coaxing. However, he was avoidant of the leash, so the runner stepped into the kennel in order to gently place the leash over his head. Once leashed, Herman was guided out of the kennel but became overwhelmed by the kennel environment. He was allowed to settle before walking at his own pace with continued coaxing. He stood with a trembling body observing the dogs behind the fence while a collar and leash were placed on him inside the catch pen. Herman was then allowed into the yard, where he initially appeared concerned around the other dogs, but gradually relaxed as he greeted them. Once he was fully acclimated, Herman explored the yard comfortably, occasionally approaching the handlers to solicit affection. For the rest of the session, he coexisted peacefully with everyone, showing no interest in engaging in play with the other dogs. Once the session concluded, he was returned to his kennel without incident. Herman could benefit from confidence-building training and continued socialization with calm dogs in a yard setting to help him continue developing his social skills.
