A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. He was sitting against the back wall of his kennel as the handler approached. The handler kneeled and spent a few moments coaxing him. He slowly approached the gate to sniff the handler's hand and then retreated to the outside portion of his kennel. The handler approached him from the outside and he remained at the back wall despite lots of coaxing. As the gate was opened, he began pacing the back wall slowly. The handler sat down next to him and spent several minutes coaxing and building trust. He would stretch his body and sniff his hand initially. The handler was able to rub his head and back. He appeared to relax and took a few steps towards the handler, appearing to want affection but then retreat once again. Eventually, he approached and placed his paws on the handler's lap. The handler continued rubbing his head, face, and chin. When the handler stopped, he nudged the handler's hand to solicit further affection. He was very wary of the loop leash and froze once it was on. He would not walk on leash. He was picked up easily without a leash muzzle and pressed his body against the handler's chest. The handler was able to look in his ears, hold each of his paws and hold his tail without any negative or concerning behavior displayed. He was wary of the handler's hand near his muzzle and would just turn away without displaying any negative behavior. As the handler placed him back on the ground, he came back over to the handler and laid down next to his leg and rolled on his back for belly rubs. He is under socialized and lacks confidence. He needs a go-slow approach to build trust initially but then is affectionate and friendly. He will also need leash training. BEHAVIORALLY OK FOR PUBLIC ADOPTION, ADULTS (REC)
