A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' In the catch pen he had a soft body and a neutral tail wag as the runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He was wary in the catch pen of the other dogs on the other side of the fence, backing away from the fence with a tucked tail and concerned eyes. He entered the yard with timid body language. He was approached by a male border collie mix and exchanged a timid greeting with him. He was approached by a female shepherd mix and exchanged a timid greeting with her. He would create space away from the dogs. He sought out handlers to solicit affection and used them as shields from the other dogs. He roamed the yard and started to relax. A male border collie mix offered him a play bow. He was interested in the play but would create space away from the collie. The collie spent a few minutes trying to entice him to play. He accepted the play and the two engaged in a gentle/dainty chase play around the yard. The more he played, the more his confidence built. A female terrier approached him and exchanged a soft greeting with her. She offered him a play bow and the two engaged in a gentle/dainty play. The longer he played with the male border collie mix, his play style morphed into a rough/rowdy play style. He would shift his play style depending on the dog he was playing with. He remained friendly and playful the rest of his time in the play yard. He was walked out of the yard for a handling assessment. He would benefit from continued socialization and confidence building. With new dogs, he needs time to warm up with them. Knuckles is social with other dogs and has a gentle/dainty play style.
