A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' In the catch pen he had a tense body as he watched the other dogs through the play yard fence. The runner easily clasped the collar around his neck. He approached the play yard fence and had a high stiff tail and was growling at the male border collie through the play yard fence. He was walked into the play yard on a long, loose leash. He was walked up to a female terrier and exchanged a soft greeting with her. He was walked away and walked up to a female shepherd mix. He exchanged a tense but tolerant greeting with her. She tried to offer him a play bow to entice him to play. He did not react to her play and sniffed his surroundings. He was walked up to a male border collie mix. He had a tense body and a high stiff tail. He started growling and lunged towards the collie. The handler pulled him back by his leash and walked him away. The male border collie was placed into the catch pen. The leashes were dropped and he roamed and explored the yard away from the other dogs. The female terrier approached him, and he exchanged a soft greeting. When she lingered near his face, he tensed up. He would wander up to the catch pen fence with the male border collie in it and tense and start growling. He approached handlers to solicit affection. He was walked out of the yard. Due to his tense behavior around male dogs, he will be calm female dogs required. He would do best with a calm female dog who would respect his space and boundaries.
