A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Nala greeted the runner with a wiggly body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail wag. She was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, and immediately began barking at her neighbors. When her neighbor barked at her, she lowered her body and quickly scurried away. Once out of the building, she walked nicely on leash, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, her body was neutral, her eyes were soft, and her tail was neutral. She entered the yard, and greeted the other dogs with an open pant and a loose wag. She tried to engage in play with a defensive dog, and had to be steered away a few times before finding an appropriate playmate. She solicited petting from the handlers, and engaged in vocal play with the other dogs. When a smaller dog entered the yard, she began chasing her around the yard with a slightly tense body while nipping at her rear end. The handlers were able to steer her away, and shift her to the side yard where she continued to play with the other dogs. Nala is selective of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle.
