A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Peanut was at the front of the kennel with a tense body, closed mouth, soft eyes, ears back, and a tucked tail. He sniffed the runner?s hand, and allowed the runner to pet his face through the kennel. He was wary of the leash, but the runner was able to leash him with no issues. He required coaxing to exit the kennel, and pulled away from the other kennels. He required gentle pressure on the leash to walk, and would not enter the catch pen on his own. He pulled away from the catch pen while biting the leash, but the runner was able to coax him into the catch pen after a few minutes. He was easy to collar. His body was tense, his eyes were wide, his tail was tucked, and he avoided the other dogs at the fence. He was introduced to one dog, who he avoided as much as possible. He stayed in one corner of the yard with a tense body, heavy pant, and a low tail. When the other dog approached him, he greeted the other dog with a neutral body, neutral gaze, perked ears, and a neutral tail wag. He became over-corrective when the dog tried to play with him, but was easy to steer with a verbal correction. He continued to sit by the pool while panting heavily until he was moved to the side yard for his handling assessment. Peanut is selective of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. Peanut was already in the side yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. The handler stepped into the yard, but Peanut avoided the handler. His body was slightly tense, his eyes were concerned, his tail was low, and he displayed a nervous demeanor. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, and back with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth. He avoided eye contact with the handler, and was uncomfortable with being handled. When the handler tried to touch his paws and tail, his body tensed slightly, and he sat down. He did not show any interest in interacting with the handler, and moved away from her as soon as the assessment was over. He waited nicely in the catch pen for a few moments before the runner returned him to his kennel with no issues.
