He growled and bit the leash. The runner stepped into the kennel, and gently tossed the leash over his head. He began to panic and flail, and tried run away. He was easy to collar due to shutting down completely when the runner touched him. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were oft, and his tail was low. He entered the yard, and hid in the corner for several minutes before he greeted the other dogs. He roamed the yard with a relaxed body, soft eyes, erect ears, open pant, and a neutral tail with a soft wag. He engaged in play with the other dogs, but was avoidant of the handlers. He stopped playing whenever he noticed the handlers looking at him, but would immediately resume play when the handlers turned away. Benny is social with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a gentle/dainty playstyle. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Benny was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. All the other dogs were moved to another yard, leaving Benny in the side yard by himself. He ran away from the handler in a panic, and had to be gently restrained with the leash. He struggled for several minutes before the handler was able to calm him down. He shut down as soon as the handler touched him. His eyes were wide, his ears were pinned back, his mouth was tightly closed, and his tail was tucked. The runner moved very slowly, and was able to pet his head, neck, and back. He pulled away from the handler when she touched his paws, and pressed his body into the corner. He was extremely uncomfortable with being handled, and was unable to relax throughout the entire handling assessment. He displayed no social behaviors toward the handler.
