Dorian was at the rear of the kennel with a tense/timid demeanor and was able to be leashed/removed using a slow approach. Once out of the kennel Dorian began to flail/alligator roll but settled with verbal reassurance. Dorian was taken to the catch pen and was collared/leashed using a slow approach. Dorian greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Dorian displayed a neutral body, slight open mouth pant, natural ear set, neutral tail position, and a neutral gaze. She allowed the dogs to gather and sniff her, but she appeared uncomfortable. Dorian was tolerant of the dogs sniffing her and moved on once the group dispersed. Dorian explored the play yard sniffing/marking various locations. Dorian appeared wary of the dogs in the yard and mostly kept to herself. Eventually Dorian settled into a corner that had little to no play/activity. She laid down and kept to herself for the remainder of the play session. Dorian appeared slightly tense/timid demeanor displaying no play style appearing to prefer to be by herself. Dorian could benefit from a slow and patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. See additional assessment for placement recommendations. Dorian displayed a tense hunched body, closed mouth, ears back, tucked tail, closed mouth, and soft eyes with a furrowed brow. Dorian appeared 'shut down' remaining in place and trembling as the handler began to pet her. The handler back tied/used assessment hand for safety. The handler was able to examine Dorian's ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail without incident. Dorian appeared tense/uncomfortable throughout the assessment and was returned to her kennel without incident. Dorian could benefit from a slow and patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. Dorian is recommended to be made available to rescue only medium energy level calm dogs required at this time. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Dorian was at the rear of the kennel with a tense/trembling demeanor and did not approach with coaxing. The runner lowered her body and used further coaxing/reassurance to no avail. Dorian continued to display a tense body, closed mouth, tucked tail, ears back, and wide concerned eyes. The runner opened the kennel door and presented the leash. Dorian backed further into the corner and began to defecate/urinate, appearing to be out of fear/stress. The runner partially stepped into the kennel and was able to gently toss the leash loop onto Dorian. He began to pull away/flail but eventually removed from the kennel. Once out Dorian started to encircle the runner, appearing tense and growling. The runner guided Dorian back into the kennel, and the leash was removed with a safety hook. Dorian could not be safely removed for an assessment and may be attempted again at a later date.
