Althea

Althea is an adoptable female Pointer looking for a home at Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa, Florida. She is fully grown and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 2 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Althea, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

--- 19-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/15/26 10:30 As Althea was coming out of the kennel with a volunteer, she immediatly started lunging and barking at the dog in the neighboring kennel. The volunteer kept walking and Althea stopped and walked with them pulling slightly. -TB --- 19-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/17/26 10:37 Per Volunteer: Althea came to the gate wagging her tail, jumped several times but eventually got down, was leashed and went to the yard with a strong pull. She ran into the yard at full speed, ran a couple of circles around the yard and then picked up a toy. She chased toys for most of the playtime, sometimes coming over and sitting or standing for pets and then rolling over for belly rubs. She jumped a few times after being petted, just with excitement and energy, but dropping a treat calmed her down. When she got tired, she dug a hole underneath a tree in the shade and sat down in the cool dirt for a few minutes. She then came over for more pets and belly rubs and went back to chasing toys. When playtime was over, she was easy to leash and went back to her kennel with a strong pull. - CL --- 19-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/18/26 13:02 Per Volunteer: Althea was very playful today. She enjoyed playing light tug with a stuffed toy, and when I threw it, she would chase after it and zoom around the yard throwing it to herself. Once there, she spent some time sniffing the perimeter and politely watching a few cats. She spent some time zooming around with a soft, squeaky toy. She allowed all-over petting, including belly rubs. - CL --- 08-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/06/26 14:16 Per Volunteer: Althea was easy to leash and walked straight toward the play yards. She was very affectionate, allowing for all over pets and belly rubs. We played fetch with a stuffy toy and worked on commands, focusing on sitting and waiting to take a treat. - CL --- 04-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/04/26 14:24 - Althea approached the gate with wiggly body and tail wag when approached, jumping up slightly when leash was presented. When leashed was passed through she continued to stand on the gate and paw but was not difficult to leash and exited the kennel with a moderate pull and bouncy gait. When released into the yard she trotted the perimeter with high tail and the same loose/playful posture. She cruised with soft body while surface scrounging for some time before responding to recall. She got the zoomies and ran circles with butt tucked, flat ears, and wide eyes. She engaged in play behavior; bowing, dashing, hopping, and stopping to dig in the dirt. She took treats with a soft mouth and solicited attention from staff for petting. She spent an equal amount of time watching cats in the parking lot, playing with me, and staying close to solicit affection. She late spent some time independently exploring the yard. - CL --- 24-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/23/26 Per volunteer: Althea was easy to leash from the inside kennel. In the yard, she split her time evenly between exploring, zooming with a stuffy toy, and soliciting treats and pets. She maintained a loose body and a high, wagging tail. --- 17-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/16/26 Per volunteer: Althea was difficult to leash initially because she was growling at her neighbor dog. She alternated between looking softly at me and growling at the other dog. I waited for her to move from the door and 'I stepped into her kennel to leash her. In the yard, she was affectionate and playful, maintaining a soft body, offering her belly for rubs, and playing gently with stuffed toys. --- 16-JUL-26 - Behavior - 07/16/26 10:29 Althea was shut outside for cleaning. She was difficult to leash due to her fence fighting towards her neighbor when the door was opened to leash her. Althea kept her muzzle shoved in the corner while snarling, barking, pushing, and snapping with high tail, tense posture, and hard eye. It took multiple attempts to leash Althea from up high to prevent a redirection. Once out, Althea tried to fence fight all the dogs in kennels around her and pulled heavily while barking. Once away from dogs in kennels, Althea walked without issue. She was placed in a new kennel. Althea has been reactive in the kennel when she sees dogs. There is a vent kennel between Althea and her neighbor but Althea was highly reactive in the kennel when returning her neighbor about an hour after Althea was moved, causing the other dog to react back and making it difficult to place her in the kennel. -CR --- 16-JUL-26 - Note - 07/16/26 08:54 Placing Althea on the move list to a corner kennel due to her high dog reactivity and safety concerns when handling her. -CR --- 15-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/15/26 17:16 when leashing Althea was trying to fence fight the dog next to her. When pulling dog out Althea fence fought with her neighbor and multiple other dogs. Staff took Althea to play yard where she greeted another dog through fence with ears and tail up. Althea played with toys and staff when returning to kennel staff stopped behind meet and greet yards. Althea pulled towards the dogs she saw and had ears up but didn't start to try and fence fight until she was passed meet and greet yards LM --- 09-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/06/26 Per volunteer: Althea (A2505351) was easy to leash, reacting briefly to a barking neighbor on the way out. She walked with a moderate pull and sat calmly at the yard gate. She came up for pets and treats, then played on her own at first. She found a large stuffy toy and stuck with it, chasing it, fetching it, and running around with it. She responded well to sit, stay, and recall, taking treats gently. She climbed the ramp for treats and did little zoomies, play-bowing before running off again. She played all over the yard and garden, recalling easily and coming up to sit for a treat wherever she was. She was easy to return and unleash. --- 08-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/06/26 Per volunteer: Althea was easy to leash but was reactive towards most dogs as we exited the kennels. In the yard, she was very playful today and enjoyed chasing multiple toys, usually bringing them back to me.
