Wybie is an adoptable male American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa, Florida. He is a young adult and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 2 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Wybie, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

PLAYGROUP ROCKSTAR FOR SIX LONG MONTHS!🕶 Wybie (A2506792) is a playful, affectionate 18 month old brindle dog who resembles an African Painted Dog with his amazing ears! He loves his time out; whether it's playing in the garden with people or running the play yard with all of his doggy friends! He is an energetic dog who loves his toys and happily shares them with people; as he thrives on the attention and affection he receives during play. He's well-mannered in training, sitting properly and gently taking treats. He's always curious to learn something new and try any new experience. Yes, he still has puppy energy; yet knows how to turn down the dial to snuggle up for a good cuddle. He's been out on foster and Adventure Tail experiences; receiving great comments on both his time in a home and out in public. He's a playgroup regular with a rough/rowdy to push/pull play style. He is a higher energy dog who is very playful and sometimes a bit pushy. As always, please speak with the Wellness team if considering adopting into a home with another dog. He's been waiting nearly six months, having arrived the end of January after being found as a stray on US 92 in Dover, Fl. He's beginning to become a little stressed at spending so many days in his shelter between play time and would love even a foster to play, curl up in a bed in a quiet room and snuggle watching TV. He'd make a great exercise companion in cooler weather. Please come meet him! FOSTER ADVENTURE TAIL: Wybie had very good manners while in the car. We went for a long walk around the neighborhood, and Wybie loved sniffing in the grass and bushes. He is a strong, energetic boy who seemed to love exercise. When he saw a dog being walked across the street he pulled toward the dog but did not bark. I gave him a bath outside which he tolerated well. He was very gentle taking all treats. He enjoyed playing with a ball that had treats stuck inside and also a soft, squeaky toy. Wybie often came up to me for pets, he was a very affectionate buddy for the day! FOSTER FEEDBACK PROS: He's a sweet boy. He likes to cuddle and gives lots of kisses He exhibits no food aggression. He's crate trained. He knows to sit and give paw for treats so he's very smart. He gets along with other dogs. He learned how to use the doggy door. CONS: With him being a puppy he has a lot of energy and anyone who adopts him needs to have patience until he outgrows this phase. His play bites are too strong and he has a rough play style when playing with both humans and other dogs. Like a lot of dogs he will try to escape out of the front door. Started to spin when coming out of kennel on leash and had a hard pull to play yard. In play yard dog played with staff chasing multiple toys with wiggly posture throughout. No issues returning to kennel LM --- 20-AUG-26 - Interact - Wybie was walked around to the indoor portion of his kennel due to him refusing to go on the inside portion. He was easily leashed but lunged towards his neighbor Scruffy who was barking and maintaining loose posture and a wagging tail. Wybie was easily directed and walked well the rest of the way. JB 8/20/2026 --- 20-AUG-26 - Observed - 07/22/26 09:00 Wybie was pacing and jumping up the kennel walls while shut outside for cleaning. -CR No change. 8/20 AM. -CR --- 19-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/19/26 16:37 When approaching Wybie's kennel he was at the kennel door, and he was great getting the leash on him. When walking over to the vehicle he was pulling heavily on the leash and was very strong when doing so. Once at the vehicle Wybie wasn't wanting to jump in, so HH had to pick him up and put him into the vehicle. Once at Courteous Canine Wybie jumped out of the vehicle just fine and was excited to be out on the grass and smell around. When Wybie got onto the ramp he would stare at the water and inch forward then inch back. He was very interested in the toys so HH and JB would play with him with the toy and then throw the toy into the water so he would get interested in the water. The man that works at Courteous Canine was great at holding the dogs up out of the water to help ease then in without just having to jump in. After Wybie went in with help a few times he jumped into the water to retrieve the toys. Once the adventure was done and we were heading back to the kennel he was still pulling when walking, but HH was able to get the leash off easily. -HH --- 13-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/13/26 14:32 when leashing dog was jumping up and down and had hard pull to play yard. In play yard dog ran around and solicited attention playing with staff with wiggly body. No issues returning to kennel. LM --- 13-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/13/26 17:27 Wybie was standing at the gate of the kennel when staff approached. He was easy to leash and a hard pull to the yard. In the yard, Wybie sniffed around. He chased a thrown tennis ball but did not return it. When called, Wybie would approach and accept pets all over. Wybie sat on command. There were no issues returning to the kennel. - NS --- 13-AUG-26 - Observed - 08/13/26 17:32 Wybie spends most of the day laying outside. Wybie comes inside once he is too hot. - NS --- 11-AUG-26 - Behavior - 08/11/26 Before reaching the kennel, Wybie was bouncing wall to wall, jumping, and barking. When approached to leash, Wybie was pushing and jumping at the door. He walked with a very heavy pull and was spinning on leash. Wybie was harness wrapped and continued to pull heavily. -CR --- 05-AUG-26 - Interact - 08/01/26 16:24 Per Volunteer: Wybie was easy to leash and walked to the yard with a heavy pull. Once in the yard, he sniffed and explored around. After a few minutes, he picked up a toy to run around with. He solicited for pets with a loose body. He occasionally would chase toys when thrown. He didn't accept most treats but responded to sit. He allowed me to harness wrap him and he walked back to his kennel with an off and on pull. He was easy to unleash. - CL --- 31-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/31/26 16:24 Wybie was laying down on the outer portion of the kennel. She was easy to leash and had a strong pull. In the yard, Wybie ran around. She chased toys but did not return them. She allowed petting all over and would sit on command. There were no issues returning to the kennel. -NS --- 31-JUL-26 - Observed - 07/31/26 16:27 Wybie spends most of the day laying on the outside of the kennel. She lays inside when she gets hot. She will not come inside if staff is inside. - NS --- 17-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/16/26 Per volunteer: Wybie came to the gate wagging his tail, sat, accepted a treat, was easy to leash and went to the yard with a strong pull.' He chased a few toys but didn't pick them up, and soon lost interest in both toys and treats.' A person came into the yard adjacent to ours, and he went to the fence to watch with his ears up, head up, tail down and relaxed posture.' He watched for a few minutes and then came back for a few quick pets.' He went off to sniff the yard and then began exit seeking, so we went into the garden.' He sniffed around the full perimeter and checked out all of the plant beds, then he went into a shady spot and dug a small hole.' He laid down in the cool dirt and allowed petting for the rest of the play time, while sitting in the shade.' He was easy to leash using a harness wrap to reduce the pulling, and went back to his kennel with a moderate pull.' He went into his kennel without issues. --- 13-JUL-26 - Interact - 07/09/26 Per volunteer: Wybie (A2506792) was easy to leash and walked with a moderate pull through the kennels, ignoring other dogs. In the grass he paused to sniff and settled into a mild pull. He explored the yard and played with toys independently. He was briefly shy of the hose spray but quickly became playful with it. He enjoyed short petting sessions and relaxed more over time. He played a gentle game of tug while lying down and explored the garden, especially the tall grass and flower beds.
