Tolliver is an adoptable male Cattle Dog looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - East in Mesa, Arizona. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 5 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Tolliver, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Memo 9/1/2026 09/01/26 11:54 Canine has shown resistance to returning to the kennel and associated concerning behaviors. Placement with a New Hope Partner is required by close of business 9/8/26 to prevent further decline and allow for behavior evaluation in a new environment. May be at risk for euthanasia 9/9/26 or sooner if warranted. Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 8/28/2026 Dog was at front of kennel, barking at handlers on approach, neutral but alert, still tail curled above spine level, took treats off the ground but then resumed barking, handler went to pull from outside for quieter space, dog stood with front paws on back door, jumped down for treats, would jump back up on door as handler attempted to leash, getting paw stuck through loop, handler retrieved leash and tried again, dog would push at door and jump up, not avoiding the leash but very active, handler able to place leash, dog quikcly exited kennel, strong pull to yard, would wander, urine marking frequently, approaching assistant handler readily to solicit attention, neutral, slight wag, sat in front of them and allowed all petting, resumed wandering, briefly jumping up on glass door into building, handler used squeaker and dog perked ears up and came up to them, took treats, walked away. Handler would toss a few toys, dog chased after but lost interest, would approach handler with neutral body, curved spine, allowed all petting, handler asked for \"sit\" and dog would jump up for treat in their hand but then settle and sat, ate gently, would alternate soliciting attnetion from both handlers, mildy jumpy. A volunteer walked a dog past yard, this dog ran up to corner of yard, forward and alert, stiff tail above spine level, as dog walked out of sight this dog would pace yard, looking up at fence and airscenting, huffing, following sound of the other dog,handlers briefly able to call away, other dog came back into sight, this dog stood at fenceline and barked, watched dog walk away then disengaged and sniffed yard, jumped up on fence for a stuffed toy in basket, handler threw toy and dog chased after it, carried it around, would not drop it or trade for treats but leaned against handler for attention while holding toy. Handler picked up leash, added clip leash, dog dropped toy and assistant picked it up, had strong pull out of yard, handler opened kennel door and dog pulled away, assistant tossed treats and toy, dog went in but immediately darted back out as handler closed door, handler would try to lead with gentle pressure, dog would pull back, began thrashing on leash, got leg twisted in leash, handler was able to unwrap the leash from around their leg then guided back to kennel, dog thrashed again, chewed at leashes for a few seconds but quickly stopped, eventually followed when handler fake stepped into kennel, removed leash with clip leash as dog jumped 8/26/2026 Handler approached kennel front; Dog was standing at door with neutral body and tail aligned; Handler spoke softly and unlocked door; Dogs tail started to wag; Handler held leash in opening and dog came forward allowing easy leashing; dog walked to yard with no issues; Once in yard handler was able to secure leash and allowed dog to explore; Dog walked around smelling and marking multiple spots; spent most of time exploring; independent; relaxed body and tail wagging; Once dog was done exploring dog solicited pets and attention to handler; did jump up on handler once but easily redirected down; Dog seems treat motivated; Sat for treats; took gently; Dog gave paw a few times; leaned into petting; Dog wasnt interested in toys; dog just stayed near handler and was calm otherwise; Handler grabbed leash and walked dog to kennel; dog had pilo walking past reactive dogs; slight pull towards but disengages to next dog; Handler used leash guidance; Dog hesitated at front; thrashed briefly; and pulled back; Handler walked dog back to yard to settle and added clip leash; attempted to re kennel again; handler tossed in treats and stepped into kennel slightly; mild leash pressure forward; and dog went into kennel; used clip leash to unleash dog; Dog came back to front tail wagging; 8/25/2026 Dog was locked in back kennel, handler approached. Dog appeared overaroused and was alarm barking and jumping up at gate with stiff posture. Neighboring dogs had been overly aroused as well causing tension. Handler was able to pull dog from front kennel with no distraction. Handler opened guillotine and allowed dog forward. Dog chuffed at handler a few times, handler offered hotdogs and presented leash. Dog was avoidant of leash. Handler placed large jackpot at gate and dog was interested enough to allow leash placement. Dog remained tense in posture. Handler walked dog over to PY, dog pulled strongly. Once PY handler slowly walked dog around and adjusted leash stopper. Handler attached leash extension and released dog. Dog surveyed PY independently for majority of outing. Dog was tense in posture with constricted pupils, trotting around PY. After some time handler was able to call dog over, dog approached with slightly softened posture and took treats from handler. Dog then returned to pacing PY in a trot. Handler retrieved leash after a few moments and prepared to walk dog back to kennel. Handler briefly brushed leash along back and dog head flipped. Handler was able to place clip leash before leaving PY. Handler walked dog to kennel and dog was reluctant to enter, handler tried to gain momentum ad step in and tried to toss treats in. Handler used moderate leash pressure to guide dog in and removed leash using clip leash. Handler then returned to back kennel and opened guillotine luring dog to back. 8/21/2026 k9 super skin crawl when touched k9 allowed all vaccines with muzzel wrap k9 walked to kennel k9 ORANGE due to nervousness and being caught on a catch pole in field due to behavior k9 wide eyed, k9 nervous, k9 tail tucked K9 ALLOWED ALL HANDLING WITH SLOWER APPROACH 8/21/2026 k9 was hiding in bushes along fence line, approched and k9 growled and barked at me, was able to place catch pole to get out of bushes, k9 was stop and go on catch pole, due to being near very busy street did not remove catch pole, was able to pick up and carry k9 to truck kennel, skin crawled when touched and tail remained tucked.
