Barkley Lee is an adoptable male Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and medium in size. Barkley Lee is a sweet, low-key boy who has made some wonderful progress during his time at ACCT Philly. Police found him as a stray on August 15th, and when he first arrived, he could be tense and vocal when approached in his kennel. However, he has shown significant improvement as he's had more time to settle in. Outside of his kennel, he is a calm and affectionate companion who enjoys getting pets, takes treats gently, and knows 'sit.' He has been easy to walk and is generally low energy, preferring to stay close to his people rather than play with toys. Barkley would love a patient home where he can continue to decompress and show off his sweet personality. Due to his length of stay, Barkley Lee is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Per volunteer 8/27: Low energy. Per staff 8/26: Medical nurse let me know that when they went up to his kennel he was hard barking and growling. They were able to remove him from kennel to attempt to get a PCR sample. After trying to get a throat swab, he began air snapping at them. Per volunteer 8/25: Low energy. Only interested in treats. Calm, low-key. Well mannered. Can be barky in kennel at first. Per volunteer 8/24: Low energy. Only interested in treats. Added housetrained clip - peed/poo outside. Per volunteer 8/22: Low energy. Very chill. Solicits pets. Treat motivated. Per staff 8/19: ACA let me know that Barkley Lee was hard barking and biting at her hands in kennel. We went to his kennel so she could show me his behaviors, and he came up to the front with a high flagging tail, hard eyes, tense body, hard barked. She put her hand up to the bars and he did a small lunge, hard barking at it and low growling. I got out a treat, and he stopped barking and growling with a looser high tail, tossed it in and he ate it. Per staff 8/18, playgroup: Steer Test: 3/5 with water and 0/5 with can. At the fence with a high tail, ears back, looking away. In the yard, lip licking, tense body, moving away when being sniffed. When greeting Daisy, tense body, high tail, ears back. Per volunteer 8/17: Low energy. Barking at kennel door. Once outside he was easily handled and allowed all over handling. Go slow. Per staff 8/17: Kennel Presentation: At the front of his kennel with hard eyes, high stiff tail, low growling and barking. Ate treats through the bars. Tossed treats towards the back and he moved away to eat them. Leash Skills: Took some time to leash up. Would back up and needed a treat lure. He continued to low growl with hard eyes, high tail and stiff body. Needed to place a pile of treats on the ground to leash. Sociability: Tense body, side eye, high tail and occasionally hackles raised. Attempted to put a collar on him; by the end of our interaction was able to put one on. He jumped up on me a few times, and I did short pets. His body remained stiff with a high tail. He was eating treats though. Dog Interaction: Met Goldie. Stiff, tolerant and moved away. Will need another meet with a dog more his speed. Return to Kennel: Went right into kennel and was able to remove leash with hand. Color Level: Exp Blue Per staff 8/17, playgroup: Ears back, high tail, wide eyes, hackles slightly raised at the fence. Opted to do a leash meet with Goldie. Tense body, able to be sniffed, side eye, tail low, ears back, moving away. Sniffed Goldie, moved away when she turned around. Per staff 8/16: Went up to the kennel and opened the door. Barkley was wide eyed, ducked his head, and I looped the leash over him. He stepped down and we walked outside. When he came out of the kennel, his hackles were slightly raised. Once outside, he sniffed around and we went to the play yard. He was indifferent to me at first, and then I pet him a few times, and he returned for more pets. I walked away and he followed me; his body was not so tense anymore. He then went around the yard sniffing various things. A dog walked by outside the fence, and his ears pricked up and he stood still. I said to him, go on, go check her out, and only then did he leave my side to go to the fence and watch her as she walked by. I took him back inside and had no issue returning to kennel. I am wondering if the reason he was so amped up earlier in the day was because the Malinois across from him was being reactive, so perhaps he was just reacting to that. However, adding a no-kids waiver out of an abundance of caution, but ok to be available. Per staff 8/16: Saw ACA in front of kennel as they wanted to take him out for PG. Barkley was hard barking, eyes wide. ACA backed up and decided not to take him out. I walked by and stood and spoke in a soft voice to Barkley. He paused, and then did the same reaction to me: hard barking, tail up very stiff and body tense. Changing to evaluate behaviorally, as he was ok on intake and prior to arriving at shelter, so could just be kennel stress, but flagging for behavior to look at. Per staff 8/15: Police mention that the dog is friendly, no aggression or resistance shown.
