About Elf

Elf is an adoptable female Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Elf, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Elf ACCT-A-259051 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Elf must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH at 10AM. Should Elf's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Elf came to ACCT Philly on August 19th after police responded to a call about a dog tied up outside.'When she first arrived, Elf was understandably overwhelmed by the shelter environment and showed signs of fear and stress, including tense body language, panting, and difficulty settling. With time, patience, and positive interactions, she has been showing us more of her sweet personality. Elf is a gentle girl who loves affection and will lean into her people for pets. While she can still be sensitive to handling when she is feeling unsure, she has become increasingly comfortable and now often seeks out attention, happily enjoying head scratches and cuddles. She has also shown a playful side, enjoying time in the yard and wanting to play with dogs through the fence. She can sometime be a little tense when meeting other dogs, but is also curious and willing to mingle. Elf can pull strongly on leash, particularly when she is excited or overwhelmed, so an experienced handler who can help her feel secure while continuing to build her confidence will be important. Elf is looking for a patient home where she can decompress, build trust, and continue discovering how wonderful life outside the shelter can be. Once she feels comfortable, this sweet girl is eager to show you her affectionate and playful side. Due to her length of stay, Elf is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter. Wanted to play with dog through fence, otherwise just wanted to be pet. Per staff 9/3: Low energy. Good fence meet. Pulls a little, but not bad. No interest in toys. Wanted to be pet most of the time. Per staff 8/31, playgroup: Mildly steerable with spray bottle (1/5) but not shake can (0/5). At gate: mid to high tail wags, attentive, ears back or up, lip licks during steer testing. In yard, curious and willing to mingle. Slightly stiff and aloof around Nana, but no issues. Per staff 8/31: Low energy. Per staff 8/30: Medium energy. Pulls on leash. Very playful. Per staff 8/29: Meeting Big Red: tense, ears pasted back, high flagging tail, lip licks, wanted to be in close proximity. Did two very small and quiet growls at different times, otherwise was tense and tolerant. Per staff 8/29: Making available for adoption/ easy in and out, some stress panting and not eating high value treats, soliciting attention. Body does get slightly tense at times when touching, but that does perhaps appear to be the dog as opposed to an indication that the tension is going to lead to something else, as we have seen these same behaviors over a period of a few days. Per staff 8/27: Kennel Presentation: At the front of her kennel, soft eyes, ears to the side, mid to high tail wags. Took a treat gently. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and came right out. Pulls strongly on leash and zig zags while walking. Sociability: In the yard, sniffed around nose to the ground, ears to the side and back, mid to high tail. Would come over with soft wide eyes, mid level tail wags. With handling high tail, ears back, tenser body, lip licked, rested her head on my leg, when I stopped handling loose body, mid level tail wags. Dog Interaction: Met Optimus, wide eyes, ears back, lip licking, tense when being sniffed, shaking off and loose body when moving away. Return to Kennel: Walked back pulling strongly, pulled back on leash when approaching kennel, hopped right into kennel with a jog and leash was removed easily. Color Level: Leveling down to blue Per staff 8/27: Medium energy. Pulls on leash. Loves to play and loves head pets. Per volunteer 8/25: Medium energy. Pulls very hard every which way. Very playful in the yard. No interest in treats. Got zoomies and loved pets. Mild issues returning. Per staff 8/24: High energy. Pulls on leash. Sweet outside. A little tough getting back in kennel. Per volunteer 8/22: Medium energy. Sought pets by leaning. Pulls on leash. Very sweet. Moderate issues returning to kennel. Per staff 8/20: Kennel Presentation: At the front of her kennel, ears to the side, mid to low loose tail wags, looser body. Took a treat very gently through the bars. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and came right out. Walked pulling moderately through the kennels, ears back, mid tail, eyes darting, panting. Outside pulled strongly at times with the same body language. Sociability: Would come over when I called to her, panting, ears back, wide eyes, mid tail. Tense with handling, ears back, low still tail, panting, moving away when I stopped. Not eating outside. Started to run around the yard pacing along the fence lines, eyes darting, heavy panting, drooling, mid to high tail. Dog Interaction: Met Diesel, tense with greetings, lip licking, easy to move away with calling, able to be sniffed, sniffed briefly. Return to Kennel: Walked back pulling strongly, heavy panting, ears back. Started to slow down on the way to her kennel, ears back, wide eyes. Once at her kennel started to pull back and buck on her leash, heavy panting, eyes darting. Went back with her and went to the eval room where she was pacing on leash heavy panting. Moved her to a closer kennel and with a clipped leash and a slight jog she went into her kennel. Color Level: Exp Blue Per staff 8/19: Did not chip, was hard growling, tense body. Per police 8/19: Behavior was fine.
