A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. Nala A5796525 (Intact) approached the runner with a timid demeanor but hesitated when the leash was presented, stepping back and requiring the runner to step into the kennel in order to leash her. Once leashed, Nala exited the kennel on her own, walking behind the runner and appearing nervous while passing through the kennel environment. Once inside the catch pen, a collar and a leash were placed on Nala without issue. She was then allowed into the yard, where Nala exhibited a timid demeanor as she exchanged greetings with some of the dogs. However, her body relaxed as the interactions continued. Following the introduction, she moved on to explore the environment while sniffing the dogs she met along the way. She occasionally approached the handlers to solicit affection. For the remainder of the session, she wandered around the yard with the other dogs, appearing comfortable in their presence, though she showed no interest in engaging in play with them. Once the session concluded, she was returned to her kennel without incident. Nala could benefit from continued socialization in a yard setting with calm dogs, where she can interact at her own comfort level and gradually develop her social skills.
