Matilda

Matilda is an adoptable female Rottweiler looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. She is senior and large in size. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Matilda was at the rear of the kennel with a tense/timid demeanor. She would not approach pushing herself further into the corner when the handler called to her. Using a slow approach the handler was able to gentle toss the leash loop onto Matilda. She was hesitant to exit requiring gentle leash pressure and guidance. Matilda was taken to the catch pen and was collared/leashed using a slow approach. When greeting the dogs at the barrier Matilda became tense/growled/lunged at the dogs. Matilda was placed into a muzzle and guided into the play yard with gentle/dainty dogs. Matilda displayed a neutral body, closed mouth, natural ear set, neutral tail position, and a neutral gaze. The dogs briefly sniffed her and then moved away. Matilda remained neutral as the dogs sniffed her then remained in the same place for some time. Matilda eventually began to explore the yard, but she kept to herself maintaining her distance from the other dogs. Matilda approached the handler a few times, but when they attempted to pet her, she flinched/pulled away. Matilda maintained a neutral demeanor keeping to herself and displayed no play style. Matilda displayed a neutral body, open mouth pant, natural ear set, and a neutral gaze. The handler called Matilda over and she approached. The handler went to pet her, but she would flinch/pull away from the handler. The handler was able to pet Matilda if they start at her chin then move slowly to the top of her head. The handler was able to examine Matilda's ears, mouth, abdomen, back, tail, abdomen, and hind limbs. When attempting to examine Matilda's front paws she placed her weight down and began to lip curl. Matilda appeared tense/uncomfortable throughout the assessment and was mostly tolerant of the exam. Matilda could benefit from a slow and patient introduction, continued socialization, and confidence building.
