Cyril is an adoptable male German Shepherd looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. He is a young adult and medium in size. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Cyril was pressed against his kennel mate with a tense body, concerned eyes, and a tucked tail. He growled softly at the runner, but retreated to the back of the kennel when the runner opened the door. The runner stepped into the kennel, and Cyril leaned away from the runner with a timid body. The runner gently tossed the leash over his head. He required coaxing and gentle pressure on the leash to exit the kennel. He pulled lightly on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were soft, and he seemed interested in the other dogs. He entered the yard and exchanged appropriate greeting with the dogs. He roamed the yard with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a loose tail wag before engaging in play with the other dogs. He engaged in a brief and very minor altercation with a senior female due to unknown causes, but was easy to steer. He roamed the yard for awhile before he began mounting the other dogs. He responded appropriately to corrections. Cyril is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle. He was moved to the side yard and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He approached the handler with a relaxed body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, and abdomen with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth, and touch his tail. When the handler tried to touch his paws, he would quickly turn to face the handler, bare his teeth, and hover over the handler's hand with an open mouth while making eye contact with the handler. He never growled or tried to bite the handler, but made it very clear that he was not comfortable with having his legs or paws touched. When the assessment was over, he allowed the handler to continue petting his head, neck, back, and abdomen while maintaining a neutral body.
