Timber

Timber is an adoptable male Great Dane looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Timber, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Timber was at the rear of the kennel along with his kennel mate displaying a tense/trembling demeanor. Timber was difficult to leash as he was avoidant/snapping at the leash. Once leashed Timber began to flail/alligator roll/leash bite/pull away as he appears to not be leash trained. Timber was difficult to place into the roll cart and was taken to the catch pen. Once in the catch pen Timber was collared/leashed using a slow approach. Timber was then guided into the play yard with a few calm gentle/dainty dogs. Timber displayed a tense hunched body, tucked tail, closed mouth, ears back, and soft eyes with a furrowed brow. Timber moved away from the dogs and moved into an isolated corner. Timber spent the majority of the play session in that one spot appearing 'shut down' and did not interact with other dogs. Timber also appeared wary of the handlers any time they approached/passed by. Timber kept to himself for the remainder of the play session and did not interact/play with other dogs. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Timber was in the play yard prior to the assessment and was given time to decompress. Timber displayed a low tense body, ears back, mouth closed, tucked tail, and soft eyes. The handler approached and Timber became tense, giving them a stern gaze. The handler used the assessment hand for safety and using a slow approach was able to pet Timber. Timber appeared tense side eyeing the hand and snapped at the hand. He pulled away/snapped at the assessment hand anytime it tried to examine/touch him. The assessment was stopped as to not further stress Timber. Timber was placed in the roll cart and was returned to the kennel without incident. Timber could benefit from a slow and patient introduction with further socialization/confidence building/on leash training. Timber is recommended to be made available to rescue only (+KHOA handling sensitivity/lack of socialization) low energy level calm dogs required.
