Mom Mimi

Mom Mimi is an adoptable female German Shepherd looking for a home at BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas. She is senior and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Mom Mimi, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Mimi. I am a female, black and brown German Shepherd Dog mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 8 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Sep 23, 2026. I am in kennel DA24. Mimi (mom) ID #A2097567 8-year-old female German Shepherd mix Black / Brown Weight: 55 lbs Intake date: 9/23/26 Status: Rescue only MEDICAL NOTES: Senior Mimi came into BARC with concerns involving her hind end. She was observed walking hunched over and mildly favoring her right rear leg. Veterinary assessment lists possible right hip dysplasia or another orthopedic issue, and pelvic/knee X-rays are needed. Rimadyl/Carprofen 100 mg once daily for 14 days was prescribed for pain/inflammation. Mimi is also HIGH HEARTWORM POSITIVE and will need treatment. BEHAVIOR NOTES: Mimi appears frightened and overwhelmed in the shelter. On 9/24, she allowed herself to be leashed, walked loosely to and from the potty yard, and spent the day quietly resting on her blanket. On 9/25 she was much more fearful'tense, crouched with her tail down/tucked, and growling/whining when approached in the run. Despite her fear, she was leashed and walked back into her kennel. This senior girl arrived as a stray while in pain and heartworm positive, and she seems to be struggling with the stress of an unfamiliar shelter environment. 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀: 9/24/2026: Mimi greeted staff at the kennel door while lying on her blanket. She allowed herself to be leashed and walked loosely to and from the potty yard. Inside her kennel, she could be seen lying quietly on her blanket throughout the day. 9/25/2026: Mimi was sitting at the back of her kennel very tense and sat up when the kennel door was opened, watching staff. Once leashed, she walked out with a crouching body and tucked tail. Once in the run, she remained sitting in the back corner until staff returned for her. She held a crouching body while growling/whining, and staff slowly cornered her and slipped the leash on. She walked back inside and into her kennel with her tail tucked. Medical Notes: 9/23/2026: Weighed 55.0 lbs. Mimi was noted to have an injured back end and to walk hunched over. She was mildly favoring her right rear limb. Exam noted right hip dysplasia/other and HW High Positive. Rimadyl/carprofen was prescribed, and radiographs of the pelvis and knees were recommended. She received routine treatments including rabies, DA2PP-V and Bordetella vaccines, dewormer, flea/heartworm prevention, and pyrantel. Volunteer Notes: 9/26/2026 When I took Mimi out of her kennel I noticed that she was so full of milk that I wondered where her babies were and why they weren't with her. She's a quiet, calm girl and walked nicely out to the runs. Another German Shepherd that is on the euthanasia list for Saturday was out meeting a volunteer in the neighboring run. They both were calm and didn't mind each other. I sat on the ground and gave Mimi treats. I love how gentle she is. We did a quick temp test and she did fine! This girl is not aggressive at all. After walking around the shelter a bit, we came across a litter of six week old puppies and realized that they all had consecutive intake numbers which means these are her babies. This mama has six week old puppies in the shelter, separated her out for euthanasia because they suspect she his favoring one back leg over the other. Sadly, that's not even confirmed yet because x-rays aren't scheduled till Saturday, but she is scheduled for euthanasia that day. It will be too late. I didn't notice a limp actually at all while I was outside, so who knows if it exists.
